Hood College Song Book

These are songs from the Hood College Songbook - Copyright, 1925 Hinds Hayden and Eldredge, Inc. Songs on this site were based on popular songs of the early 20th century. Many were written by Hood students for Campus Day Weekend song competitions. They are in no particular order. If you don't see a song your class wrote or sang, we'll be happy to add it to our page! Please email us at alumoffice@hood.edu with the words and tune and any other info you might have.

Thanks to all our creative students for these fun ditties.

Alma Mater

Words by Gertrude Hoy '12
Tune: "And Believe Me If all Those Endearing Young Charms"

High tower above us, thy columns so fair,
Gleaming white in their calm majesty;
Thus long have they battled the wild storms of time
And will stand in the years yet to be.
Tho' we wander afar from thy sheltering walls,
Borne along on life's rough surging sea;
Yet our hearts, Alma Mater, unchanging and true
Will be loyal and faithful to thee.

Hood College, above thy dear, green ivied walls,
How fond memories cluster and twine.
There are friendships so golden that bind us to thee,
Preparation for life, too, was thine.
May we never forget thy lessons so true
But honor and praise thy dear name.
In our joy and our tears, in our triumphs and fears,
May our lives e'er be worthy of thee.

A. B. — B. S. Song

Tune: "Little Brown Jug"

At Hood there's lots of rivalry
Between the B. S. and A.B.
They both contend their course is best
Now friends, which one will stand the test?

CHORUS
Ha! Ha! Ha! You and me
I'm B.S., and I'm A. B.
Ha! Ha! Ha! You and Me
So let's agree to disagree

The A.B. 's study French and Math
To help then o'er life's rugged path.
They've learned just how to do and say
The right thing in the proper way.

CHORUS
The B.S.'s learn to cook and sew
And darn their hubbie's socks just so
They know just how their homes to keep
And the proper way to dust and sweep

CHORUS

Dear Alma Mater

Tune: "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes"
Vera Allshesky

Dear Alma Mater, loved by all that e'er attended thee,
We lift our hearts in praise and song to they great majesty.
For thou alone has taught us truth, some lessons hard to learn,
And for the knowledge we have gained, our thoughts to thee will turn.

Not merely sordid facts didst thou unmask before our eyes,
But deeper, clearer teachings showed us evil to despise.
Thy beauty fair makes us believe all things created good,
Then for they blessings, thanks to thee, dear Alma Mater, Hood!

I Like to Drift Off in Fancy Free

Words and Music by Dorothea Herman '22

I like to drift off in fancy free,
Dreaming sweet dreams of your,
I like to unclasp life's golden days
And once more live them o'er.
Around me I see my classmates throng,
Dear faces I've learned to love.
I'll be true to them, true blue to them
Through the years Hood is breathed forth in song.

CHORUS
Oh there's a spot we all love dearly,
it's name is Hood, dear Hood,
so dear to her we've stood,
That though we wander far o'er land or sea,
Through all the years we pledge our love to thee.

Oh Daddy Get Your Daughter Out of Debt

Oh Daddy get your daughter out of debt,
And reimburse your little pet.
They've been treating me so mean
When the bills are overdue, they send them to the Dean.
Now I want a new dotted swiss,
But I've more pressing needs than this--
My winter furs aren't paid for yet,
Oh, Daddy get your daughter out of debt.

Oh Evolu

Oh Evolu--Oh Evolu, there's nothing in this world that she can't do.
She said to the monkey, andI'll make a man of you,and and she did too--
Oh Boy! But the very best thing that she's done yet
Was to put us in the Hood College set,
Oh Evolu--Oh Evolu, Oh Eva, Iva, Ova, Evolution.

There Is A College In This Town

There is a college in this town, in this town,
And there we sit and never frown, never frown, -
And always we are as happy as can be;
For we have love for none but thee.

CHORUS
Fare thee well, we'll not forget thee,
Tho' for years we may have left thee,
And to thee our Alma Mater we'll be true, be true,
Hurrah! Hurrah! for Hood College, girls, hurrah!
For other colleges we do not care a straw,
We will forever wear the blue and grey,
And yell for Hood College, Hip! Hooray!

We go to classes every day, every day,
Excepting when we stay away, stay away,
And never flunk in our and exams,and
Though we are cold and shake like clams.

CHORUS
And when we hear that electric bell, electric bell,
We grab our books and rush pell mell,
And reach our classes just in time
To say our lessons, O! Just fine!

CHORUS

Where, Oh Where

Where, oh where are the verdant Freshmen?
Where, oh where are the verdant Freshmen?
Where, oh where are the verdant Freshmen?
Safe now in the soph'more class.
They've gone out from their mathematics,
They've gone out from their mathematics,
They've gone out from their mathematics,
Safe now in the soph'more class.

Where, oh where are the gay young Soph'mores?
Where, oh where are the gay young Soph'mores?
Where, oh where are the gay young Soph'mores?
Safe now in the junior class.
They've gone out from their English Lit,
They've gone out from their English Lit,
They've gone out from their English Lit,
Safe now in the junior class.

Where, oh where are the jolly Juniors,
Where, oh where are the jolly Juniors,
Where, oh where are the jolly Juniors,
Safe now in the senior class.
They've gone out from their James' psychology,
They've gone out from their James' psychology,
They've gone out from their James' psychology,
Safe now in the senior class.

Where, oh where are the grand old Seniors?
Where, oh where are the grand old Seniors?
Where, oh where are the grand old Seniors?
Safe now in the wide, wide world.
They've gone out from their Alma Mater,
They've gone out from their Alma Mater,
They've gone out from their Alma Mater,
Safe now in the wide, wide world.

Where, oh where are the staid alumnae?
Where, oh where are the staid alumnae?
Where, oh where are the staid alumnae?
Safe now in the arms of men.
They've gone out from their dreams and theories,
They've gone out from their dreams and theories,
They've gone out from their dreams and theories,
Safe now in the arms of men.

Deep Down In Our Hearts

Deep down in our hearts we've got a feeling for you
Oh yes a feeling for you
As we come to sing our hearts are open to you
Because we know you're true blue;
So dear sisters all we'll keep on thinking of you
And keep on loving you too,
'Cause we've got a sisterly feeling for you
Deep down in our hearts

Hood March

Hood, with singing hearts, we raise our song to you,
Hood, with standards high, we raise the grey and blue.
The truth and love you've given;
Ideals for which you've stood, we'll cherish
To your future daughters who will love our dear old
Alma Mater, Hood.

Tell Me Why

Tell me why the stars do shine,
Tell me why the ivy twines;
Tell me why the skies are blue;
Tell me, Hood College, just why we love you.

Because God made the stars to shine;
Because God made the ivy twine;
Because God made the sky so blue;
God made Hood College; that's why we love you.

Pal Song (Prize Winner--Class of 1927)

The days that I spent with you, dear pal,
Are dear to the heart of me,
Memories of Hood and you, dear pal,
I'll keep as a part of me.
I'll always remember the work and play,
Braddock Picnic and Campus Day;
The autumn's wind and the whistle's call
To hockey, tennis, and basketball;
Christmas vespers and caroling,
May Day and Step Songs in late, warm Spring,
Remember, the Pipe of Peace, dear pal,
Commencement, when friends must part;
The days that I've spent with you, dear pal,
Are very dear to my heart.

Hood College, Here's to You

We've come to college, the grandest college
That we could find in any state
We've searched each mountain
Each hill and valley
And we have searched the nation wide
At last we found, that at Hood College
Our search was ended
At last our dreams have all come true
We found new hopes, made new friends
And fulfilled our aspirations
We're here now,
So, Hood College, - Here's To You.

Tune: "Silver threads among the gold"

Rest your gaze upon the Freshmen
They will gladly be your slaves
But if you should overwork them
They will go to early graves
They are only here to open doors
They must pour your water too
But its only cause they know that
You were once a freshman too.

Tune: "Goody, Goody"

So you go to bed a singin' the blues each night - Goody Goody
Cause you know your clock will get you up nice and bright - GoodyGoody
We ring our alarm for you
But what do you threaten to do
Why to break us in little pieces
Although we're all brand new.

So you lie awake a'thinkin' of clocks all night - Goody Goody
Well we hope our alarm goes off like dynamite. Hurrah and Hallelujah
You had it comin' to you
Goody goody for us tick tock
Goody goody for clock, tick tock
We'll get you up on time
That's what we'll do.

Dartmouth, Dartmouth

Tune: "And Daisy, Daisy"

Dartmouth, Dartmouth,
we stole a man from you.
We've got President Truxal,
safe from the likes of you.
Hood's a wonderful college;
we can absorb lots of knowledge.
But we will try, as the years go by,
to steal more men from you.

Hood We Praise Thee

Tune: "Drink a Highball"

Hood, we praise thee and raise thee
A song of fond acclaim
Though we leave thee Alma Mater
May we ever praise thy name
Voices blending and sending
A pledge of truth and good
Loyal ever may we never
Cease to love our dear old Hood.

We'll endeavor forever
With hand and mind and heart
To keep sacred Hood traditions
And ne'er from them depart
With the knowledge that college
Is wisdom right and good
Loyal ever may we never
Cease to love our dear old Hood.

Apple Corps

Tune: "You're In the Army Now (Bugle Call)"

We are the Apple Corps,
We could not ask for more,
We'll fight the foe
For Doctor Joe,
We are the Apple Corps.
