Feb. 17: E-Nnovation grant provides funds toward endowed faculty position

FREDERICK, Md.—Hood College has been selected to receive a $944,000 grant from the Maryland Department of Commerce to establish an endowed faculty position in Advanced Bioproducts Research and Education. The grant comes from the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF), which was established to promote scientific and technical research. The grant was matched by funding from the Hodson Trust.

The Endowed Chair in Advanced Bioproducts Research and Education will allow Hood to compete with the best schools for the best faculty. In addition to supporting the endowed chair position, the funding will be used for staff and support personnel, graduate and undergraduate research and scientific equipment.

“The E-Nnovation award will bring new expertise to campus to help prepare both undergraduate and graduate students with the skills to participate in the growing bio-economy,” said Craig Laufer, Ph.D., professor of biology and primary writer of the proposal. “This will also enhance and expand our ongoing collaborations with regional partners to bring innovations in biofuels and bioproducts production from the research laboratory to the market.”

“The core mission of Hood College aligns perfectly with the primary goal of the E-Nnovation Initiative,” said Deborah Ricker, Ph.D., Hood’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. “We both seek to balance comprehensive, basic research with its professional application.”

The State of Maryland’s General Assembly created the MEIF in 2014, and the governor will appropriate $8.5 million annually from fiscal year 2016 through 2021. Investment earnings on the endowments will be put toward research in scientific and technical fields.
