April 2: Two named to College's board of trustees

FREDERICK, Md.—A Hood College alumna and entrepreneur, and an area financial expert with an extensive background in finance were recently elected to four-year terms on the College's board of trustees.

Cynthia Newby, a 1967 graduate of Hood College, has more than 40 years of experience in editing, publishing and product development. She is the founder and president of Chestnut Hill Enterprises, Inc., which develops print and digital textbooks for medical administrative programs.

Before launching Chestnut Hill, she served as vice president for product development for Dialogue Systems and as an executive editor for McGraw-Hill Book Company.

Newby is certified as a professional medical coder by the American Academy of Professional Coders, recognized as the industry standard among physicians.

An active participant in her community, Newby serves on the board of trustees of the Animal Welfare Society and the Roxbury (Conn.) Public Library. She also served on Hood's board of associates for the past seven years.

Leonard J. Miller is the president and founder of Leonard J. Miller & Associates, Chartered, a full-service accounting firm that specializes in sophisticated auditing, accounting, business consulting estate and wealth planning, and tax services for clients throughout the mid-Atlantic region and beyond. He is a personal finance specialist, a certified valuation analyst and a licensed certified public accountant in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Miller is among a select few certified business exit consultants in the nation and has helped many privately held businesses with their ownership transition, succession and exit strategies.

He is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants, where he has served on that organization's board of directors and as chair of various committees.

In recognition of his exceptional leadership, Miller was honored with the MACPA Max Teichmann Award for outstanding committee chairman. In addition, he was one of 36 appointed members of the joint trial board of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Smart CEO Magazine named Miller as one of the Baltimore area's to 50 SmartCPAs in 2006 and one of the top 40 SmartCPAs in 2008 and 2012. Baltimore Magazine recognized him in 2011 and 2012 as a Five Star Wealth Manager by Baltimore Magazine.

Miller earned an MBA from Loyola College of Maryland and completed the Wharton School of Business program on mergers and acquisitions.
