Hood adopts new study abroad initiative

Monday, March 31, 2014

FREDERICK, Md.—Hood College recently affiliated with a national coalition of colleges and universities that has pledged to significantly increase the number of undergraduate students who study abroad.

Hood joined the Institute of International Education's Generation Study Abroad, a five-year initiative that brings leaders in education, business and governments together with a goal of doubling the number of U.S. college students studying abroad. Hood's intent is to facilitate and encourage student participation in international experiences they will need to advance their careers and participate in the global economy, or to work together across borders to address global issues.

Hood has committed to increasing the overall number of undergraduates studying abroad to 10 percent; to create new exchanges in Latin America, Africa and Asia; and to increase the number of short-term faculty-led programs.

This initiative is just one of many opportunities Hood offers to enhance students' global awareness. Each year approximately 33 students study at universities in Australia, Argentina, England, France, Germany, South Korea, Spain and more. Hood also offers a global studies minor and will begin offering the program as a major in the fall. The interdisciplinary course of study examines the dynamics of globalization and its historical foundations.

More than 150 higher education institutions from 41 U.S. states have already signed the Generation Study Abroad Commitment, including large state and private universities, liberal arts colleges, community colleges, historically black colleges and universities and other minority-serving institutions. The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and several foreign governments, as well as key higher education associations and study abroad provider organizations, have also pledged to support the goals of the initiative.
