June 12: Berkheimer, Nunn appointed to lead board of trustees

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

FREDERICK, Md.—A prominent Frederick businessman and community leader has been appointed to lead the 24-member Hood College Board of Trustees.

Philip A. Berkheimer, senior vice president and financial adviser with Morgan Stanley Wealth Management in Frederick, takes over from Cheryl Dreiling, a 1969 alumna of the college. Berkheimer has served on the board since 2010, and as vice chair of the board since 2011.

Berkheimer's investment career has spanned more than 45 years. The Hanover, Pa., native has served in leadership positions for numerous community organizations, including as president of the Rotary Club of Frederick; and as chair of the Frederick Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees and FMH Development Council. He is also a founding trustee for the Community Foundation of Frederick County and a former member of Franklin & Marshall College Alumni Association.

A 1969 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., Berkheimer served four years as a U.S. Marine Corps officer before beginning his career in the financial services industry with the Baltimore firm of Alex. Brown & Sons.

"All institutions of higher education, but especially small, independent liberal arts colleges, face significant challenges going forward, not only from demographic changes, but also from the questions that have arisen about the value of a college education," Berkheimer said. "Our charge as trustees is to ensure that a Hood degree provides the same value that it has for more than a century."

"The Hood College community was pleased to learn of the appointment of Phil as the new chair of the board," said Hood President Ronald J. Volpe. "Phil has been an important member of the board during the past few years as the college continues in its transformation. His high energy and commitment to our special mission will serve him well in leading the board during these historic times."

Janet Spaulding Nunn, a 1961 graduate of Hood, was appointed vice chair of the board. She has served in a variety of leadership positions for the college and as a board member for many local and national organizations, including the YMCA, the United Way, the Literary Council of Frederick and Frederick Memorial Hospital. She and her husband, Jack, have supported a number of the College's initiatives, including campus renovations, a concert series and student scholarships. Nunn currently resides in San Diego, Calif.

The appointments of Berkheimer and Nunn were made at the board’s most recent meetings June 5 and 6.

Dreiling, who served on the Hood board since 1998, was awarded an honorary doctorate from Hood for her service and commitment to the college at its May 18 commencement exercises.
