Recital features accomplished concert cellist, pianist

Thursday, April 4, 2013

FREDERICK, Md.—A recital featuring an accomplished concert cellist will be held April 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Brodbeck Music Hall at Hood College.

Katja Zakotnik, a resident of Frederick's sister city, Schifferstadt, Germany, will partner with Hood pianist Noel Lester in a program that includes works by Bach, Brahms, Barber, Ginastera and Foss.

Zakotnik is among the upcoming cellists in Germany and has performed throughout Europe. She began playing cello at the age of 5 and, by the age of 18, won a number of local competitions, played with chamber orchestras as a soloist and won first prizes in several German competitions. In 2009, she won the audience award of the Ibla Grand Prize competition. She is known for unconventional concert forms—moderated concerts built around a special topic.

During Lester's 40-year career as a solo pianist, chamber musician, vocal accompanist and professor of music, he has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The professor emeritus and concert manager at Hood directs the College's Summer Chamber Music Festival. He also serves as the artistic director of the Maryland Concert Opera and director of music at Grace United Church of Christ in Frederick.

Zakotnik and Lester first performed together last year in Schifferstadt at the invitation of the city's mayor's office. Their concert was in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship.

The concert is free and no tickets are required. Brodbeck Music Hall is handicapped accessible.
