FREDERICK, Md.—A Hood College professor will discuss her recently released book March 18 at 12:30 p.m. in the Whitaker Campus Center Commons.
Purnima Mehta Bhatt, professor of history, anthropology and interdisciplinary studies, will give a talk entitled Her Space, Her Story to mark Women's History Month. A book signing will follow the lecture.
Bhatt's book by the same title explores the relationship between women, water, religion and art in the stepwells—water structures that are reached by descending a set of steps—in Gujarat, India, from the 11th to the 19th century. She documents the roles women played in building, patronizing and inspiring the construction the stepwells, and examines them primarily as a distinct space for women.
The event is sponsored by Hood's Office of Multicultural Affairs and International Student Programs, the Humanities Council and the department of sociology and social work.
