Sara Malec earned her B.S. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and taught 8th grade math in Atlanta with Teach For America for two years. She returned to school at Georgia State University, and received her Ph.D. in 2013 for her work in combinatorial commutative algebra, studying a class of algebras known as intersection algebras. After two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, Dr. Malec joined the Hood College faculty in 2015. She is a Project NExT fellow (Brown 13), and her research continues in combinatorial commutative algebra and in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
