About the Program
The First-Year Read program creates a sense of community among students by offering a variety of shared intellectual and social experiences. During Summer Orientation, students download an electronic version of the selected book onto their new iPads. During Fall Orientation students will meet in small groups with volunteers from the Hood community to discuss the book’s themes and the issues it raises. Special activities related to the book are offered during the fall semester as well, and students are encouraged to keep the conversations going through Facebook exchanges and an ongoing blog. The program culminates with the author’s visit to the campus, when all first year students will have an opportunity to meet with this special guest during the day and attend a lecture and book signing later that evening.
