About the Program
The First-Year Read program creates a sense of community among students by offering a variety of shared intellectual and social experiences. During Summer Orientation, you will download an electronic version of the selected book onto your iPad. During Fall Orientation you will meet in small groups with volunteers from the Hood community to discuss the book’s themes and the issues it raises. Special activities related to the book are offered during the fall semester as well, and you are encouraged to keep the conversations going through Facebook exchanges and an ongoing blog. The program culminates with the author’s visit to the campus, when you will have an opportunity to meet with this special guest during the day and attend a lecture and book signing later that evening.
