Mathematics Education, M.S.

Graduates earning a master's degree in mathematics education from Hood College:

  1. Gain an in-depth foundation of mathematics through understanding:
    • Geometry;
    • Algebra;
    • Probability, statistics and data analysis;
    • Problem solving and mathematical modeling;
    • Discrete mathematics; and 
    • Appreciating mathematics at a level appropriate for their position.
  2. Acquire best practices in mathematics education, including:
    • Understanding and describing relevant standards (NCTM, CCSS, and Maryland state standards) related to algebra, geometry, probability, statistics and problem solving;
    • Developing lesson plans that incorporate appropriate standards;
    • Integrating research about adolescent learning into mathematics instruction;
    • Differentiating instruction to create greater student success;
    • Using a variety of teaching strategies;
    • Using technology effectively in teaching mathematics;
    • Applying knowledge about mathematics teaching and learning to lesson planning and classroom practice;
    • Using multiple forms of assessment to evaluate student learning;
    • Helping various communities understand the role of mathematics and mathematics instruction in today‚Äôs world.
