Graduation Year: 2012 Major: Mathematics Why did you choose Hood College? Since I graduated from the United World College, I had a list of colleges in the United States from which to chose, including Hood. Hood College is a reputable school, with a low student-to-teacher ratio, a great geographical location and student support. Have you participated in an internship or leadership opportunity in the local area or on campus? I had two summer research experiences in mathematics. The second one was in algebra, at Hood College, and I was closely supervised by Dr. James Parson. I am also a teaching assistant in mathematics at Hood. What did you gain from that experience? I learned how to approach mathematics with creativity; how to be able to read, write and teach mathematics; and how to use many new software packages and programming languages. I also gave a talk at two math conferences and learned public speaking skills. These experiences gave me the opportunity to do higher level math and discover what field I want to concentrate on, in (hopefully) graduate school. What is your most memorable experience at Hood? I might already be a bit nostalgic, but I would say the events organized for international students at the beginning of my freshman year. Since I was an international freshman who not only entered college for the first time, but also the country, the Hood community support was very important for me. And it also was a start of some lifelong friendships. What do you value most about your relationships with your professors? Guidance through my studies, but also their concern about my academic interests and future plans. What is something that surprised you about Hood? Emergency exits equipped with alarms. That was definitely a surprise. What was your most rewarding class or academic experience at Hood? Why? Through various kinds of assignments and liberal arts emphasis, I learned how to learn and how to be efficient. I have been getting the most out of my education with the least effort and this is a lesson that is also useful in all other aspects of my life. When you aren't in class, what is your favorite thing to do in your spare time? Socialize. I need people around all the time, and I need to diversify my daily activities. What is your favorite campus event? I love May Madness! It is spring, warm and sunny, people are in the good mood, and the campus is full of music and life. |
