Graduation Year: 2012 Major: Social Work Why did you choose Hood College? It's funny how I chose Hood. My mother went to Hood, so when I went on college visits she always commented about how Hood has this or they offer this. So, finally, Idecided to visit Hood to see just how "great" it was. And here I am. Have you participated in an internship or leadership opportunity in the local area or on campus? Plenty! As a senior social work major I have been interning since August at the Frederick County Department of Social Services for Adult Protective Services. Last summer I also interned in Limerick, Ireland, with a Hood social work study abroad opportunity. As far as leadership, I was president of the Hood Student Social Work Organization for two years. During my tenure, I organized community events and campus events to gain awareness for a multitude of social issues. What did you gain from that experience? I gained a tremendous amount of social work and life experiences from my internships. Also, through my leadership with the SSWO and participation in other Hood clubs such as Hood Service Association, Hood Environmental Advocacy Team, Ionic Society, Hood Men's Soccer Team and the Hood Habitat for Humanity Team, I was able to network and make connections with many different groups of students. What is your most memorable experience at Hood? One of my most memorable experiences at Hood wasn't really at Hood but because of Hood, namely the social work program. I was awarded the National Association of Social Workers-Maryland Chapter Student of the Year for 2012. It is a great honor to be recognized and I owe most of it to Hood's social work department. What do you value most about your relationships with your professors? I value how helpful and guiding the professors are. Each one cares about you and your education, even if they are not related to your major. What is something that surprised you about Hood? I was surprised by how many different and unique lectures Hood offers outside of the classroom. Almost every week there is at least one special lecture or presentation that is informative and intriguing. Last week Hood hosted the former president of Ireland and human rights activist, Mary Robinson. What was your most rewarding class or academic experience at Hood? Why? Well, I would say all my social work courses have been very rewarding, but aside from that I would say it was sophomore year when I took an anthropology course. Anthropology is the study of humans, past and present. I learned about different cultures and humans around the world in a holistic perspective. When you aren't in class, what is your favorite thing to do in your spare time? I love soccer, period. If I'm not playing soccer, I'm outside doing something, like riding my bike or running downtown or at Baker Park. What is your favorite campus event? My favorite campus events are the finals week activities like massages, eating cheesecakes and late night breakfast. |
