Big Sweep Frederick

Wednesday, April 13, 2011
Six Hood juniors, along with more than 900 participants from area schools, churches, scout troops, businesses and other nonprofit organizations, volunteered in Frederick’s 10th annual Big Sweep, held in conjunction with National and Global Youth Service Day and Earth Day.

Similar to a walk-a-thon, Big Sweep volunteers solicit sponsorships for picking up trash and recyclables in Frederick City and County.  The event not only raises funds for participating organizations but also serves as a community-wide effort to preserve the beauty of area roads and parks.

Hood’s Ionic Society members Melissa Joseph, Justin Abodalo, Jamie Kreager, Jake Ausherman and Jessica Jeffrey, as well as Michelle Kuehl participated in the event. They cleaned 7th Street, adjacent to the College, and will donate the money they raised to a local charity.

Students are inducted into the Ionic Society during their sophomore year. Selection is based on outstanding service to the College and for embodiment of the principles of hope, opportunity, obligation and democracy, which best define the spirit of a Hood education.
