FREDERICK, Md.—The mathematics department at Hood College will host a special mathematics day for high school girls Monday, March 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sonia Kovalevsky Math Day, which is named in honor of the first woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics, is designed to encourage young women to continue their study of mathematics. Students and teachers from each Frederick County high school are invited to participate in the half-day event, which features hands-on workshops that challenge students' problem-solving skills; a panel presentation by women who use mathematics in their careers; and lunch with Hood students, faculty and administrators.
Members of Hood's student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics and other volunteer students will assist with the workshops.
The event is supported in part by a grant from PNC Bank and a number of the College's academic and administrative departments.
