Through the works of artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and their
Venetian counterparts, this course will examine the major developments in Italian art from
1480 until 1580. It will explore a range of artistic and cultural issues, including the notion
or artistic genius, the relationship between the study of nature and artistic invention and
the changing status of the visual arts. Close attention will also be given to the political and
religious contexts.
