Prerequisites: 5 courses in German at the 200 level or above, or departmental approval. (3 credits)
This course is a survey of the development of drama in German speaking countries from the
Middle Ages to the modern era. Students will read, analyze and sometimes enact plays by
Hans Sachs, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Friedrich Schiller, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe,
Heinrich von Kleist, Frank Wedekind, Georg Kaiser, Heiner Müller and Tankred Dorst.
Lectures will provide the cultural background required to understand the dramas and connect
them to social, aesthetic and philosophical movements.
