(4 credits/3 lecture and 3 laboratory hours)

In this course we will investigate many basic topics in biology by studying the organisms and processes found in a tropical freshwater aquarium. Students will take an active role in establishing and maintaining aquaria in the laboratory. Using aquarium organisms as models, students will be introduced to such topics as plant and animal structure and function, genetics and reproduction, the cell cycle, biotic energy transformations, aquatic microbiology and nutrient recycling.
