literary internationalism raises concerns of ethnicity, religion and political allegiance. How
does a novelist modulate from local concerns to a global readership? From Africa we may read

Shusaku Endo; from Europe, Italo Calvino; from Latin America, Gabriel García Márquez;
and from “America,” Vladimir Nabokov.
