ENGL 400 Really Old English: Anglo-Saxon Language, Literature and Culture (CORE— Western Civilization)

Prerequisites: Junior standing and completion of at least 12 credits in literature. (Second semester—odd years/ 4 credits)

An introduction to the earliest forms of English language and literature. This course will cover the basic elements of Old English (the oldest form of the language we speak today), and teach students how to read and translate Old English prose and poetry. The course will also explore a range of Anglo-Saxon literature, some in the original language, and some in translation, with an eye to understanding the culture and history of the Anglo-Saxon world.
