Academic Advising

Will I have an Academic Adviser?

All students enrolled as degree candidates at Hood have an academic adviser to assist them with their academic plans and progress. Faculty members serve as advisers to degree candidates. Freshmen and sophomores are not assigned to a major field adviser, but instead are advised by a special group of faculty who have expressed interest in working with students at the pre-major level. Once majors are declared in the spring of the sophomore year, students are reassigned to an adviser in the major discipline.

Transfer students who declare their major upon entering Hood are assigned an academic adviser in their major field. The staff in Hood's Department of Academic Services acts as advisers to Hood Start students (high school students enrolled in a course at the College).

Upon entering the College, freshmen and transfer students who have not declared a major are assigned to a faculty adviser in the Freshman-Sophomore Advising Group. Students are encouraged to explore various subjects or disciplines during their first year and a half at Hood. In the second semester of the sophomore year, or upon earning 56 credits and being in good academic standing, students declare a major and are assigned an adviser in their major. Juniors or seniors who wish to change advisers should contact the Registrar.
