One Social Science elective course (see fall of freshman year for options)
COMMENTS:
*12 credits in science are required (at least one course must be a biological science course and at least one must be a physical science course). In order to finish in four years, it is essential that students enroll in three 4-credit science courses to fulfill the 12-credit science requirement.
**12 credits in mathematics are required (MATH 111, 120, 201, 202, or 207; MATH 112 or PSY 211; MATH 106 and MATH 107). Students must satisfy the Hood Core with MATH 111, 112, or 201 or PSY 211.
***It is recommended that students complete their foreign language requirement by the completion of their sophomore year.
NOTES:
Early Childhood Education majors who wish to study abroad in the junior year should keep this plan in mind when scheduling courses each semester. If they wish to study in a country where a foreign language is spoken, they must be sure to enroll in the appropriate language courses at Hood in the freshman and sophomore years. Students planning to study abroad should consult an ECE advisor when planning their course of study at Hood College.
The Education Department strongly recommends completion of the 2-credit Physical Education Core requirement in the freshman year and taking three 4-credit science courses beginning in the freshman year.
The State of Maryland has increased requirements for teacher certification in the content area of reading. Students in the ECE program are required to complete four reading courses.
Students must obtain Maryland’s minimum passing score on Praxis I before admission to Phase I.
Students must obtain Maryland’s minimum passing score on Praxis II in partial fulfillment of program completion requirements. The Education Department requires students to take both PRAXIS II examinations prior to entering Phase III of their program.
Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) Requirement: Students must achieve a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) on a 4.0 scale and a 2.75 G.P.A. in education courses for admittance into Phase II of the teacher certification programs. Students are expected to maintain a 2.75 cumulative G.P.A., as well as in education course work. Furthermore, a student earning a C- or lower in required education courses may not continue in the teacher education programs.
Students seeking teacher certification must complete two consecutive semesters of the yearlong internship.
Contact the Education Department for specific information regarding admission to and requirements for this program (Dr. Kristy Calo at 301-696-3572, TA 119.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION ADVISING
The Education Department will determine if any courses transferred will fulfill Program Prerequisites or required courses for Phases 1-3. Maximum of 60 credits allowed in the major. Students who elect and complete additional education courses will be required to exceed the 124-credit minimum required for graduation.
