SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATION
Hood offers preparation leading to State of Maryland teaching certification in eight subjects: biology, chemistry, English, French, history, mathematics, or Spanish, grades 7-12, and in Art PreK-12. For more information, refer to both Education and the field in which you plan to major, in this Advising Manual or in the Hood College Catalog.

Comments:
Students interested in Secondary Education must pass Praxis I before admission to Phase I
Completion of additional general education requirement courses as specified by each department at Hood (For example, biology majors must also take PHYS 101 or 203 and English majors must also take specified communication arts courses.)
Any Hood College freshman student who intends to graduate and receive secondary education certification within four years and who intends to student teach in a secondary subject (Art {PreK-12}, biology, chemistry, English, French, history, mathematics, or Spanish) must enroll in EDUC 204 (Foundations for Effective Teaching) in their sophomore year.
All freshmen intending to receive secondary education certification and enrolling in EDUC 204 (Foundations for Effective Teaching) in the fall of their sophomore year must contact Dr. Thomas Bogar, Program Coordinator, for an advising appointment: 301-696-3773; bogar@hood.edu in the spring semester of the freshman year.

PHASE I – STUDENT INTERNSHIP:
Along with these courses students must complete one-half day per week of field experiences in designated secondary schools during each semester of Phase I. Secondary Education students must successfully complete PRAXIS I tests for admission to Phase I. Students must maintain a 2.75 GPA in Education courses (with no grade below a C), in Content Area Courses, and Overall.

PHASE II – TEACHING INTERNSHIP:

PHASE III – TEACHING INTERNSHIP:
Secondary students spend the full semester student teaching. Students may not enroll in other college courses during this semester due to demands and workload of the teaching assignment. Outside employment is strongly discouraged. Students are advised to take Praxis II, required for Program Completion status (and resultant certification) in the summer between Phases II and III. The Exit Folio is submitted in Phase III.

APPLICATION FOR STUDENT TEACHING
Students must maintain a 2.75 cumulative g.p.a. and a 2.75 g.p.a. in education (with no grade below a C), and a 2.75 g.p.a. in their respective content areas for admittance into Phase II and III. Admission is based upon evidence of successful academic and field experiences. Clinical experiences are emphasized in the professional education courses.
