Student Activities

Our department has two active student organizations on campus: the Gamma Gamma Chapter of Gamma Sigma Epsilon, the national chemistry honor society, and the Free Radicals, a student club open to any students with an interest in chemistry or biochemistry and typically composed of chemistry, biochemistry and biology majors.

Gamma Gamma Chapter of Gamma Sigma Epsilon

Gamma Sigma Epsilon, the national chemistry honor society founded in 1919 at Davidson College, currently has 36 chapters in 22 states. The Hood College chapter of GSE received its charter on May 13, 2005. The purpose of the society is to recognize outstanding academic achievement in chemistry.

Membership in Gamma Sigma Epsilon requires students to successfully complete 20 hours of chemistry courses with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in both chemistry and general coursework. New members are inducted during the fall semester.

Free Radicals

The Free Radicals is a club open to all students with an interest in the chemical or biochemical sciences. Meetings begin early in the fall semester and are advertised throughout Hodson Science Center. Elections for officers occur in the fall of each academic year. Past Free Radicals events have included ice cream socials, the Chemistry Olympics, and Mole Day activities, such as the mole hunt.
