Mission Statement
The Department of Economics and Management consists of a community of faculty members who are teacher-scholars and mentors, and students who are deeply engaged in real-world problem solving. We aspire, as individuals and as a department, to be excellent teacher-scholars who are actively engaged in our respective fields and in the search for solutions to the complex problems facing individuals and organizations in an increasingly global economy.
We aim to create a collaborative teaching, learning and research environment emphasizing social responsibility, the importance of a coherent ethical framework for evaluating outcomes, the need for a global perspective in an increasingly global political economy and ecology, and the interaction between theory and practice. We are committed to seeking external support that will enable us to fulfill our mission. If we are successful, others—inside and outside Hood College—will recognize us for the unique contributions we make.
We are committed to educating our students in the core competencies in the disciplines of economics and management. We expect, and work to educate our students to be able write and speak well and to think logically. We educate and expect our students to be able to use basic quantitative and qualitative skills to analyze complex economic, social, political and organizational problems. We also aim to expose our students to the intellectual rigor of our disciplines. Students who take our courses or who major in economics or management are expected to master the theoretical frameworks of our disciplines and to demonstrate how those frameworks can be used to address real-world problems.
The economics and management faculty is committed to mentoring its students. We engage them as research assistants and teaching assistants. We invite them to participate in collaborative research with us and to participate in our seminar and working papers series. We are committed to having each major engaged in at least one meaningful research experience while at Hood. We work with them to develop a range of co-curricular and extra-curricular educational and learning opportunities, including study abroad, that enables them to develop their full potential. We are committed to helping our majors find internships in Washington, D.C., that emphasize social and ethical responsibility and global awareness.
Upon graduation, our majors are prepared for the world of work, for graduate school and for lifelong learning rooted in an intense intellectual curiosity developed while attending Hood College.
