Janet Ambrose, Ed.D.
Assistant professor, Coordinator, Dual Certification Program, teaches courses in the areas of elementary and special education. She is coordinator of the dual certification program in elementary and special education. Dr. Ambrose is interested in legal and instructional issues in the area of special education. Her research interest is the area of dispute resolution in special education. She coordinates a state grant for the development and improvement of teacher education programs in special education. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton, a master’s degree from William Paterson University, and a doctorate in the administration of special education from Virginia Tech.

Thomas A. Bogar, Ph.D.
Assistant professor, is the undergraduate Secondary Education coordinator, and the NCATE Accreditation Coordinator. He teaches Secondary methods courses and leads the Secondary Phase III student teaching seminar. He previously taught English and Theatre in Montgomery County Public Schools and at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. His bachelor’s and master’s degrees are from the University of Maryland in Secondary Education: English and Theatre, and his doctorate is from Louisiana State University in Theatre History/Literature and Secondary Education. He is the author of two books: a biography of 19th century actor-manager John E. Owens and a history of American Presidents’ Attendance at the Theatre.

Kristine Miller Calo, Ph.D.
Assistant professor, acting coordinator of the undergraduate Early Childhood Education program, teaches courses in reading and educational leadership. Dr. Calo received her undergraduate degree in English composition from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, her master’s degree in curriculum development from DePaul University in Chicago, and her doctorate in education with a major in literacy and a minor in educational leadership from George Mason University. She taught reading/language arts in the Chicago and Phoenix suburbs and was a district and school administrator in Tempe, AZ. She also was Director of Marketing for National Geographic’s School Publishing division in Washington, DC.

Cassandra Day-Kells, M.S.
Instructor of Education and Reading Specialist; B.A., Shepherd College; M.S., Hood College (2005). Instructor and Reading Specialist in the graduate Reading Specialist program and lead teacher for the Graduate Reading Specialist for 6 years. She also has held instructional positions for 16 years for Frederick County Public Schools including 9 years as a classroom teacher and
7 years as a reading specialist. Her professional interests lie in assessment and data analysis and literacy leadership including effective partnerships within schools for improved student success. Ms. Day-Kells earned her Bachelors degree in elementary education from Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, WV and her Masters degree in curriculum and instruction: reading specialization from Hood.

John George, Ed.D.
Associate professor of education and chair of the Education Department is a former elementary school principal and curriculum specialist for elementary mathematics and social studies in Frederick County Public Schools (MD). His interests include social studies pedagogy, multiple intelligences, and the history of Frederick County public schools. He obtained the Bachelor’s degree at Georgetown University, the Master’s at Johns Hopkins University, and his Ed.D. at American University.

Christy Danko Graybeal, Ph.D.
Assistant professor of education, coordinates the M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction Elementary Science and Mathematics concentration, and teaches courses in mathematics education. Dr. Graybeal received her undergraduate degree in elementary education and mathematics from Moravian College, her master’s degree in mathematics from American University, and her doctorate in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in mathematics education from the University of Maryland. She taught mathematics in middle schools in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Debra Hanley, M.Ed.
Clinical Instructor, Head Teacher in the Onica Prall Child Development Laboratory preschool, works with the Lab School Director and other Education Department faculty in areas of curriculum development and performance assessment of children and Hood College interns seeking teaching certification in early childhood education. She has worked in the early childhood field for the past 20 years, teaching pre-K, kindergarten and, most recently, 1st grade. She earned both her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in early childhood education from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Ellen Garfinkel Koitz, Ed.D.
Associate professor, coordinates the graduate reading specialist program and teaches courses within that program. Dr. Koitz also serves as the director of the Hood College Summer Reading Clinic. Her professional interests include emergent literacy, and spelling and writing development in young children. She received her undergraduate degree from Catawba College in Salisbury, NC, her master's degree from the University of Georgia and her doctorate from the University of Virginia.

Mary Pat Robinson, M.Ed.
Clinical instructor in the Onica Prall Child Development Laboratory preschool, working with the Lab School Director and other Education Department faculty in areas of curriculum development and performance assessment of children and Hood College interns seeking teaching certification early childhood education. She has worked nearly 20 years in grades one/two and kindergarten. Ms. Robinson earned her Bachelor’s degree (Summa Cum Laude) from Towson State University, and her Master’s in Educational administration and Supervision at Loyola College, Baltimore, MD.

Judith Sherman, Ed.D.
Assistant professor, has taught in the graduate reading program at Hood for 10 years as an adjunct professor, and now teaches both undergraduate and graduate reading courses fulltime. She is director of the M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction program. She has had 33 years of experience in public school education, including eight years as a classroom teacher, seven years as a reading specialist and 18 years as an administrator. She has held teaching and administrative positions at various elementary schools in Frederick County and served as an evaluator in the Frederick County Even Start program.

Paulette Shockey, Ph.D.
Assistant professor, director of the graduate program in Educational Leadership, teaches science undergraduate and graduate courses in the education department. Dr. Shockey is interested in the achievement of students by gender, particularly the retention and achievement of male students. Before coming to Hood College, Dr. Shockey was a curriculum specialist for secondary science, a middle school principal, and a high school principal in Frederick County Public Schools. She holds undergraduate degrees from West Virginia Institute of Technology, a master's degree from West Virginia University, and a doctorate in education planning, policy, and administration from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Susan R. Weddle, M.Ed.
Visiting assistant professor and acting director of the Onica Prall Child Development Laboratory School. Mrs. Weddle received her undergraduate degree from Radford College and Master of Arts from Hood College. Mrs. Weddle taught Kindergarten for 27 years in the Frederick County Public Schools. She ran a Multiple Intelligence Lab in the public schools tapping into the different learning styles of children. She has served as mentor/role model for struggling teachers in F.C.P.S. Mrs. Weddle has supervised interns in their student teaching placement at Hood College. She has been involved in writing curriculum for Frederick County Public Schools, speaker and presenter for Project Approach in the county and an active participant in Project Boost.

Tanya Williams, M.S
Instructor of Secondary Education teaches the foundation courses in the Education program. Ms. Williams has a BA from Shepherd College in History with a concentration in education and an MS in Curriculum and Instruction from Hood College. She has held a variety of positions with Frederick County Public Schools with the majority of her career as a middle school Social Studies instructor. Most recently Ms. Williams has been an adjunct instructor for Hood College. Additional professional interests include working with online technology.
