Music Overview

Music Department

Music is an important component of the liberal arts on Hood's campus. The Department of Music offers a major with three different tracks, two minors, individual instruction and the opportunity to participate in performing groups.

Aside from its academic programs, the music department also offers community programs and performances. Did you ever want to learn to play an instrument? The Hood College Preparatory Division offers private lessons to the community in the following areas:  piano, organ, harpsichord, violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, English horn, bassoon, flute, voice, drums, all brass instruments, and composition.

Dozens of professionals, including members of Hood's music faculty, perform on campus each year. The College's location near both Washington, D.C., and Baltimore attracts world-class musicians and exposes students and members of the community to a broad array of cultural opportunities.

Many students combine their programs with other majors or minors in such widely diverse fields as education, computer science and biology. In our applied music program, students receive individual instruction from some of the metropolitan area's most outstanding musicians.

Hood's core curriculum requires all students to complete two courses in aesthetic appreciation, one of which must be in art, music or film. The core also includes a music course as one option in meeting theWestern Civilization course requirement.

Outside class, students may participate in the Hood Choir, the Hood Chamber Singers and the Hood String, Wind, Early Music and Jazz Ensembles. All of these groups perform throughout the academic year, both on- and off-campus.
