  • Latgale (Latgola ) is the historic Eastern region of Latvia.
  • It is one of the three Latvian provinces, along with Vidzeme (Livonia) and Kurzeme (Courland), at the time including Zemgale (Semigallia), which united to create an independent Latvia in 1918. Latgale has a religious, cultural, linguistic and historical identity related to, but different from the rest of Latvia.
  • The name Latgale, (Latgola in Latgalian) is the historic designation (Latygola, Letthigallia) for the territory of the Latvians in the 9th-13th centuries A.D. The original name fell into disuse as foreigners applied differing versions of the name e.g the Germanized "Lettia" and Latin "Livonia". in later centuries. Its modern usage dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. Until the end of the nineteenth century it was also known as "Inflanty" (Inflanty Polskie) or Polish Livland. Inflanty is a Polish corruption of "Livland. It also has been referred to as "Klein Livland" (little Livland).
