Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Aquatics, the lifeguard ensures the safety of patrons and monitors activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents, provide assistance and respond to emergencies to swimmers.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Lifeguard (100%)

  • Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency;
  • Caution swimmers regarding unsafe areas;
  • Maintain order in swimming areas;
  • Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid;
  • Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services;
  • Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility;
  • Clean and refill swimming pool;
  • Determine chlorine content and pH value of water with water testing kit;
  • Inspect facilities for cleanliness and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor;
  • Present professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service;
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports;
  • Maintain fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance);
  • Participate in regular in-service training sessions;
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

At least high school student with six months to one year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.  Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; skilled in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.

Certificates
Current CPR certification, First Aid certification and current Lifeguarding certification. Pool Operator’s Course certification a plus. Valid driver’s license and good driving record.  Employee is required to maintain current certifications and licenses while employed.

 

Technology Skills

Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite productivity software such as Word, Excel and database software and office equipment including multi-line telephone required.  Ability to use internet and e-mail.

Language Skills

Strong written and oral command of the English language essential.  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation and grammar.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of faculty, staff, students, alumnae and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts timely and accurately, either manually or by using a calculator.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands, fingers, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; swim, climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.  Good vision is required to perform the job.  Lifeguards must be able to focus on individual swimmers and survey the pool area at the same time to ensure safety protocols are being followed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to water and outside weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to extreme heat and humidity.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.  Noise factors could include interaction with staff, students, other employees and the public, telephones and office equipment.  The employee will be exposed to pool chemicals and pool mechanical equipment.  An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures (training provided).
