Summary

The provost reports to the president and acts as the chief executive officer in the president’s absence. The provost is responsible for providing leadership and vision for all academic programs. More specifically, the provost is responsible for academic planning and program development, educational policy, program assessment, and faculty evaluation and development. Reporting directly to the provost are 16 academic department chairs, director of the library, director of academic services, director of the career center, director of institutional research, the honors program, registrar and the dean of the graduate school.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Chief Academic Officer and Academic Program Support (85%)

  • Promotes academic excellence, ensures legal compliance, and oversees the development of general goals and directions for the academic programs of the college. Incorporates technology to enhance the learning experience and to create operating efficiencies.
  • Directs and coordinates activities of deans and chairpersons in establishing priorities and plans for program development and faculty and student recruitment.
  • Determines scheduling of courses and recommends implementation of additional courses.
  • Promotes organized research, grant development and engagement activities and for ensuring the quality of all academic activities.
  • Participates in activities of faculty committees, and in development of academic budget. Manages overall academic budget for College to ensure support of College’s academic mission.

Academic Leadership (15%)

  • Advises the President on academic matters, and personnel matters such as retention, tenure, promotion, disciplinary actions, and review of all academic appointments. Oversees contracts for regular and adjunct faculty positions.
  • Serves as liaison officer with accrediting agencies, which evaluate academic programs.
  • Serves as chief administrative officer in absence of President.
    • Works closely with Vice President of Student Affairs to ensure student success.
    • Provides general direction to Academic Department Chairs, Director of the Library, Director of Academic Services, Director of the Career Center, Director of Institutional Research, the Honors Program, Registrar and Dean of the Graduate School.

    Education and/or Experience

    The successful candidate must possess an earned doctorate or equivalent, a record of teaching, research and scholarship, the ability to articulate a dynamic vision for a residential liberal arts college that offers professional and pre-professional programs, evidence of excellent financial and human resource management skills, demonstrated skill in team building and working with other senior officers and ability to maintain collegial relationships and a commitment to diversity.
