Summary

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of the Applications Group, the qualified applicant is a creative, motivated IT professional who can work both independently and as the member of a team, while providing professional customer service.  The programmer analyst will install, maintain, and support commercial administrative software applications for multiple College functional areas, and develop local applications and modifications to support Hood-unique requirements.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Applications Programming and Database Support (100%)
Support the operations of functionally diverse campus offices and maintain campus-wide software applications:

    • Install, maintain and upgrade campus-wide information systems;
    • Support users of campus-wide information systems in a Windows environment;
    • Assist users in developing standard and ad-hoc reports on various tools;
    • Analysis and design systems to solve business problems;
    • Maintain campus-wide databases;
    • Train users in the employment of campus-wide software and information gathering and reporting tools;
    • Share critical information with other members of the IT department in a timely fashion;
    • Serve as the initial contact for telephone support for the users in support of campus-wide application(s);
    • Create new and modified screens, windows, and scripts for third-party software to support daily operations;
    • Write, debug, test, document, and install programs;
    • Develop Web programs and interfaces to link campus-wide databases to Hood’s Website;
    • Automate electronic data interchanges within Hood and with selected external parties;
    • Perform other duties as required.

Education and/or Experience

A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three year’s experience developing computer programs or applications are required.  Experience in higher education is a plus.

 

Technology Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and 2008 including T-SQL and Enterprise Manager;
  • Capable of generating functional user reports in one or more of the following tools: MS Reporting Services, Vista Views, Access, Crystal Reports and Dynamics FRx;
  • Knowledge of MS Windows XP and Vista operating systems;
  • Functional understanding of web programming, especially Active Server Pages (ASP) and ASP.NET.

 

 

Language Skills

Strong command of the English language, both oral and written.  Ability to effectively communicate complex information to persons outside the profession, and respond collegially to questions from external and internal customers both in person, in writing and on the telephone.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with and apply basic mathematical and statistical concepts.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to decompose complex problems into discrete, manageable solution sets; to solve problems that deal with a number of variables in situations where only limited precedents exist; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form; and to work independently in developing and executing project plans, yet recognize when the plan impacts another organizational element and requires coordination. Ability to work in the theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, often for long periods of time; walk from one end of the campus to the other; stand; use hands and fingers; and talk and hear. 

This individual may also be required to carry equipment to different parts of the campus; and she/he may occasionally need to use stairs to access upper and lower levels of buildings.  This employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Noise factors could include interaction with other staff and public, telephones, and office equipment.
