Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Admission, the Admission Counselor/Assistant Director of Admissions position is responsible for assisting the development, implementation of effective recruitment strategies and tactics and recruiting prospective students. 

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Student Recruitment (85%)

  • Develops and implements strategies to recruit undergraduate students from assigned geographic territory (requires 8 – 12 weeks of regional overnight travel in the fall and 2 – 4 weeks of travel in the spring).  Activities include: analysis of past enrollment trends and current projections regarding regions which are likely to result in student enrollments; determination of travel and recruitment contacts; high school visits and college fair coverage; coordination with other staff members for fair or high school visit coverage by staff or alumnae, as needed;
  • Develops and implements specific recruitment events in the territory that might include coffee house events, special panel sessions at high schools, talks with honor societies and other high school organizations;
  • Establishes personal contacts with students, parents and guidance counselors through travel, e-mail, correspondence, and telephone contact; performs comprehensive follow-up on prospective students, interviews prospective students (may require evening hours);
  • Analyzes qualifications of prospective students utilizing established admission standards, guidelines and criteria; makes recommendations regarding admissions decisions and scholarship eligibility for students from assigned territory;
  • Gives presentations to groups of varying sizes regarding the admissions process, Hood College’s academic and extracurricular offerings, financial aid, and other related topics;
  • Provides detailed assistance for admitted students, including follow-up on financial aid, housing, registration for summer Orientation session, or other related issues;
  • Provides leadership and supervision to the tele-team, assigns projects, works closely with Director of Admission to develop projects that help meet enrollment goals;
  • Recruits and trains overnight host and hostesses for the Admitted Students Day overnight programs.

General Admissions Office Duties (15%)

  • Participates in special Admissions events (requires evening and weekend hours);
  • Participates in regular staff meetings and assists with daily office functions as necessary;
  • Assists other counselors by covering college fairs or high school visits if needed;
  • Participates in training or other professional development activities;
  • May assist in coordination of special projects within the Office (student volunteers, campus events, etc.).

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree and two to four years of related experience in admissions preferred or equivalent combination of education and/or experience required.  Familiarity with liberal arts colleges is preferred. 

Technology Skills

Strong computer proficiency in internet applications, Office Suite Productivity products (such as Microsoft Word, Access, Excel & Powerpoint); and ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.

Familiarity with general principles and components of admission data systems and student information systems. 

 

Language Skills

Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate the value of a liberal arts education.  Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, faculty, staff, and other constituencies.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with and apply basic mathematical concepts timely and accurately, either manually or by using a calculator.  Ability to apply analysis of trends concepts.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

This position requires local and some regional, state or national travel.  A standard work-week may not apply (evening and weekend hours are required) as support is needed for special projects or events.  Job incumbent must possess a valid driver’s license.
