Motivational Workshop to be Held Oct. 18

26-Sep-03

In honor of Disability Awareness Month, a motivational speaker will conduct an interactive workshop at Hood College Oct. 18 and will share her experiences as an above-the-knee amputee.

Donna R. Walton of Washington, D.C., will present "Power to Dream, Reach and Win," and will explore strengths, strategize goals, and help participants develop an action plan for change. Topics will include assertiveness, decision-making, fear of failure, fear of success, procrastination and self-confidence.

The workshop will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Campus Commons Room of Hood's Whitaker Campus Center. The event is open to the public and costs $5; there is no fee for Hood College students, faculty and staff.

Walton was diagnosed with a potentially fatal form of bone cancer at age 18, and her left leg was amputated above the knee. Instead of letting this health tragedy limit her life, she decided to use it to inspire and uplift others. She has since dedicated her life and her work to dispelling myths and misconceptions about what is possible for people with disabilities, and everyone else, to accomplish. In 1997, Walton founded Dream Reach Win, an independent consulting company in Arlington, Va., which helps individuals and companies realize their full potential.

Walton earned a bachelor's degree in elementary and early childhood education from American University and a master's degree in adult education for Syracuse University. She is currently a doctoral degree candidate in rehabilitation counseling at The George Washington University, where she also serves as a faculty member.
