New Playing Field and Locker Room Planned for Fall 2009
In fall 2009 Hood will dedicate a new outdoor FieldTurf® playing field, locker room facilities and stadium entrance to campus that will lift Hood’s athletics programs to new levels. The project will be funded primarily through a gift from The Hodson Trust, which has awarded the College more than $64 million since 1936. For more information about the campus renovations, read the full news story.
Alums and Friends Gather in San Francisco
San Francisco-area alumnae, alumni and friends gathered for a cocktail reception Feb. 24 at the Metropolitan Club. The event was hosted by Susan Gearey Van Pelt ’79. Hood Students Spend Spring Break in North Carolina
A group of 20 Hood students recently spent their spring break week in Whitakers, N.C., at the Franklinton Center at Bricks, where they worked on renovations to the center’s administration building and pool. The Hood students also visited area schools where they tutored students. The trip was organized by Hood’s Student Activities Office. Administrators who made the trip with the students included Ted Chase, Ph.D., associate dean of students; Dean of the Chapel Rev. Beth O’Malley; and Brent Ayer, men’s and women’s cross country and track head coach. For more information about the trip, read the full news story.
Thanks to All Who Answered the Call!
And congratulations to Hood’s student phonathon callers, who raised more than $45,000 in annual funds gifts and pledges from alumnae, alumni and parents during spring phonathon. This year’s four-week phone calling campaign yielded 15 percent more than last spring’s calling effort, suggesting that Hood’s donors recognize that now, more than ever, is the time to invest in the future and ensure that a Hood College education continues to be attainable and affordable for all of our students.
If you missed the call, it’s not too late. You can make your annual funds gift online or call (301) 696-3713.

Task Force Completes New Association Structure
Bylaws of the Hood College Alumnae and Alumni Association were slated for review in June 2007. A task force, facilitated by current association president Dottie Van Steinburg ’96, was appointed and included representation from alumnae and alumni, Hood faculty and members of the Institutional Advancement staff. The task force was charged with reviewing the current structure and making recommendations that would align the association with the current goals of the College. After review by the task force, a revised board structure and updated bylaws were completed.
Please review the standing committee chair positions and the responsibilities of each chair. If you are interested in any of the positions, please contact Linda Hoffman, director of alumni relations, or call (301) 696-3900.
The current president, vice president and secretary-parliamentarian will continue in their elected positions until June 2009. We will announce a call for nominations for these positions in April 2009. Two-year terms will begin July 2009.
Supporting Summer Faculty Research
You are invited to support an endeavor that strengthens the very heart of Hood College—its faculty—through a competitive, well-respected program that awards grants to faculty for professional and curriculum development and research during the summer. Each year, the Hood College Board of Associates reviews proposals and awards grant monies but the requests for support are greater than the funds available. Your gift will make a difference. You may make a gift to professional development or to the McCardell Professional Development Endowed Fund. Last year, for example, Donna Bertazzoni, professor of journalism, and Janis Judson, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, revised their curriculum for their Censorship in America course following extensive study of “Censorship in the Age of YouTube.” Jennifer Ross, Ph.D., associate professor of art and archaeology, worked at an archaeological dig in Turkey where in previous years she has taken Hood students; and Griselda Zuffi, Ph.D., associate professor of Spanish, researched the life stories of political prisoners, incorporating her findings into classroom teaching. For further information on how you can support this program, contact Joy Derr, director of development communications at Hood, or call (301) 696-3703.
Alum Directory
The Office of Alumnae and Alumni Relations is currently working with Harris Connect, a company that specializes in integrated data research, directory and Internet solutions for educational institutions and other organizations, to create an alumnae and alumni print directory. The directory will help alums stay better connected to classmates, friends and Hood. If you have not already been contacted, you may receive a phone call or e-mail from Harris Connect in the near future. If you have any questions concerning the project, please feel free to contact the Office of Alumnae and Alumni Relations, or call (301) 696-3900 or (800) 707-5280 (option 2).

What happens to Hood memorabilia when it is donated to the College?
Over the years, Hood’s library staff has maintained an archive for memorabilia donated to the College. In October 2007, the Hood College History Museum and Archives opened on the second floor of Hood’s Beneficial-Hodson Library and Technology Center. It houses such things as photographs, diplomas, a 1920s gym suit, a Hood blazer, dolls, and even the original desk and typewriter used by the College’s first president, Joseph Henry Apple, L.L.D., Ped.D., and president emeritus. Visiting hours for the museum are currently by appointment; however, the museum will be open for the Hood History Museum Roadshow Sunday, March 22 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., and during Reunion Weekend, June 5-7. |
