Handel's "Messiah": Celebrating a Hood Tradition
The Hood College Choir and the U.S. Naval Academy’s Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs will present the 60th annual performance of Handel’s “Messiah” Saturday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. in Hood’s Coffman Chapel. Doors will open one hour before each performance, which runs about one hour and 40 minutes. Tickets, which are available now, are $20 for adults and $15 for students.

Tickets may be purchased Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the information desk in the Whitaker Campus Center, or by calling (301) 696-3964. If available, tickets will be sold at the door. Coffman Chapel is handicapped accessible. For more information, read the full story.

New Members Named to Board of Trustees
Five new members were recently named to Hood’s board of trustees. The new members include Richard Adams, CEO and president of the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce; J. Brian Gaeng, president of BlueRidge Bank; Gail L. Gamble, M.D., ’69, co-director of the lymphedema clinic at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; Mark Gaver, president and CEO of GTI in Germantown, Md.; and Janet Spaulding Nunn ’61, a civic leader and community volunteer and former president of Spaulding, Inc., in Meadeville, Pa.

Two additional members will join the board in March 2008. They are Eva Teig Hardy ’65, senior vice president of external affairs and corporate communications at Dominion Resources Services, Inc.; and Margery Elfin, Ph.D., Virginia E. Students and Donors Recognized at Reception
Current students as well as past and present donors were recognized at an endowed scholarship appreciation reception Sunday, Nov. 4. The countless individuals, organizations and foundations that have given to Hood have helped to establish nearly 200 named scholarships and support the education of a majority of Hood’s undergraduate students.

President Volpe Appointed to Board of UCC
Congratulations to President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D., who was recently appointed to one of four at-large president roles for the Class of 2008 on the executive steering committee of the United Church of Christ Council for Higher Education. The position will offer vital insight into the life of UCC-related institutions and give them an opportunity to engage in the networking of the Council with the denomination.

Library Anniversary and Museum Grand Opening
The campus community gathered last month to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Beneficial-Hodson Library and the grand opening of the Hood History Museum. Professors Publish Scholarly Works
Martin Foys, Ph.D., associate professor of English, recently published “Virtually Anglo-Saxon: Old Media, New Media, and Early Medieval Studies in the Late Age of Print,” an exploration of the transmission of information from before the invention of the printing press to the present.

David Hein, Ph.D., professor and chair of Hood’s department of religion and philosophy, recently completed “Geoffrey Fisher: Archbishop of Canterbury, 1945-1961,” an account of the life and career of the 20th century archbishop.

Student Wins Scholarship for Service
Erica Royer ’10 recently received a scholarship for her 10 years of service and commitment to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a nonprofit, charitable organization that provides trained guide dogs for the visually impaired.

New Purse Design
Kathy Pires-Lengyel ’81, creator of Significant Journey “purses with a purpose,” has introduced a new line of Nitty Gritty purses that are designed to the perfect size for carrying today’s necessities—an iPod, cell phone, driver’s license, credit cards and cash. The 4-inch wide, 7-inch high purse is available in four different styles. Ten percent of the profits from the sale of each purse go to charity organizations. M.F.A. Student Publishes Pottery Book
Kristin Muller, a graduate student in Hood’s M.F.A. program, recently published a book entitled “The Potter’s Studio Handbook: A Start-to-Finish Guide to Hand-Built and Wheel-Thrown Ceramics.” Kristen, an education director for Brookfield Craft Center in Brookfield, Conn., has been a potter and teacher for 20 years. Her specialty is wood-fired ceramic sculptural vessels which she has exhibited throughout the United States and in Japan.

Community Invited to Stargaze

Hood Theatre Performs “Lysistrata”
A production of Aristophanes’ “Lysistrata” will be performed Nov. 29-Dec. 1 and Dec. 7-8 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. by Hood College Theatre. The performances will take place in Hood’s Avalon Performing Arts Studio in the Tatem Arts Center. Tickets, which can be purchased at the door beginning 90 minutes before each performance, are $8 for general admission; $5 for Hood faculty and staff and other students; and free for Hood College students. Students Host Networking Reception
The Hood College Management Association invites alumnae and alumni, parents and friends to their networking reception Thursday, Nov. 15 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Whitaker Campus Center Commons. Noel Lester and Nancy Roldan 30th Anniversary Tour
In a prelude to their Dec. 6 concert in New York, Noel Lester and Nancy Roldan will be in concert at Hood Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. in Rosenstock Hall Auditorium. The duo, who will be performing on two Mason and Hamlin concert grand pianos, will premiere a work written especially for them in honor of their 30th anniversary tour. Athletics News

Men's and Women's Cross Country
The men's cross country team placed five runners in the top 10 en route to a narrow 25-30 victory over Southern Virginia University. Sophomore William Andrews completed the 5K race with a time of 17:33 to take third overall while senior Faraz Shoai finished fourth in 17:41 and junior Nick Manning (left) came in fifth in 18:07. On the women's side, junior Danielle Sgro bested the field of 22 runners in a time of 20:26 in the 5K race. Hood won the invitational with 38 points, three better than second-place Villa Julie College and six better than third-place Southern Virginia University. Freshman Lauren Smith took runner-up honors with a time of 20:43 and senior Sara Stiles was eighth in 22:56.

Field Hockey
The seventh-seeded field hockey team fell to the second-seeded St. Mary's College (Md.) Seahawks 5-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. Junior goalie Ashley Saylor made 14 stops in defeat, as the Blazers were outshot 38-5 in the contest. Sophomore Jen Graham collected three shots while senior Christa Lundskow notched a pair. Sophomore Sarah Balukoff (left) was credited with three defensive saves and freshman Patsy Davis tallied one in the losing cause.

Men's and Women's Swimming
Junior Matt Haynes lowered his school record in the 50 free (22.31) against Marymount University. Senior Jason Kinder won the 500 free (5:24.43) and freshman Robert Ennis (1:06.75) won the 100 breast in his Hood debut. Kinder won the 1000 free (11:06.23), Ennis won the 200 breast (2:33.85) and freshman Kyle Atras won the 500 free (7:35.48) against York. Senior Katie Hitchens won the 50 free in both meets and captured the 100 free (58.31) against Marymount. Against the Spartans, senior Amy Kaufman (left) won the 500 (5:44.11) and 1000 (11:39.67) freestyles and freshman Kim Wolfgang bested the field in the 200 individual medley (2:26.90).

Men's Soccer
The men's soccer team was eliminated from the Capital Athletic Conference tournament by top-seeded Salisbury University by a final of 9-0. Despite holding Salisbury's leading scorer, Kyle Sterling, scoreless on the afternoon, the Sea Gulls amassed a total of 35 shots on the day, including 17 on goal. Sophomore Shawn Fernholz made seven saves in the loss as the Blazers managed just one shot, that by freshman Adam Peterson (left) in the first half.

Women's Soccer
Senior Courtney DeSisto (left) had a memorable Senior Day as she scored the lone goal of the contest to lift the Blazers to a 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference victory at Thomas Athletic Field. DeSisto netted the 10th goal of her career in the blue and gray in the 23rd minute off a rebound. After Hood's game with Goucher College was postponed, the sixth-seeded Blazers traveled to Fredericksburg, Va., to take on the sixth-seeded Mary Washington Eagles in their first-ever CAC tournament. Hood fell 3-0 to the Eagles despite 11 saves by freshman keeper Rachelle Buhrman.

Volleyball
Junior Jamie Gardner (left) and freshman Kristina Straub each recorded double-doubles but the Blazers came up short, falling 3-1 on Senior Day to the visiting Wesley College Wolverines in a Capital Athletic Conference match at Gambrill Gymnasium. Gardner finished with a team-high 13 kills and 10 digs while Straub tallied 18 assists and 29 digs. Senior Caroline Woodhams made her return to the court for the first time since Sept. 19 and set up 14 Blazer kills to go along with three of her own. Senior Jamie Bussey registered 31 digs to lead the defense.
