On Friday, April 28, 2006, from 3 – 4:30 p.m. in the living room of Alumnae House, P. Buckley Moss, nationally acclaimed artist, will sign prints of her painting entitled “Hood College Days.” A limited number of prints, with or without the Hood College seal and/or artist's proof, will be available for purchase at the signing. Ten percent of the proceeds will support the P. Buckley Moss Award for Special Education, a scholarship fund that she established at Hood. KUDOS: Congratulations to Amanda Ward Grace ’85 and Timothy Kueberth ’98 who returned to their alma mater to take part in the performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s final opera masterpiece, "The Magic Flute." Amanda and Timothy joined a cast of other professional vocalists, students and faculty for a wonderful performance. Bravo, Amanda and Timothy!

HOOD SENIOR AWARDED TWO PRESTIGIOUS ACADEMIC AWARDS: Whitney A. Trettien ’06 was named a Truman Scholar, one of the most prestigious honors awarded to college students in the United States. She is the second Hood student to receive this award; Diane Ann Lewis ’95 received the award in 1994. Whitney was also the 2006 recipient of the John and Edythe Portz award, one of the highest honors given to a Maryland honors student. Click here for more information about Whitney and her honors.

HOOD SOPHOMORE RECEIVES NIH UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP: Chemistry major Candice M. Pfiester ’08 was selected from a highly competitive national pool of 260 applicants for the National Institute of Health Undergraduate Scholarship Program. An honor student at Hood, Candice will receive up to $20,000 in scholarship money and was granted a paid internship this summer at NIH in Bethesda, Md. Click here for the complete story.

SOCIAL VISIONARY SPEAKER: LAYLI MILLER-MURO: On Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at 7 p.m. in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center Commons, Layli Miller-Muro, author and executive director of the Tahirih Justice Center in Falls Church, Va., will speak on “Ending Violence Against Women: A Global Struggle for Social Transformation.” Miller-Muro will also be available to sign her book, “Do They Hear You When You Cry,” that she co-wrote with Fauziya Kassindja about Kassindja’s life, flight from Togo, Africa, and fight for freedom in the United States.
