Stargazing at Hood KUDOS! Sue Hecht '85, former CEO of Heartly House, was honored for her commitment and 13 years of service to that agency when the boards of directors of Heartly House and the Frederick County Community Foundation approved changing the name of The Heartly House Fund held by the Community Foundation to The Sue Hecht Heartly House Fund. Heartly House serves victims of domestic violence, rape, sexual assault and child abuse. Congratulations, Sue!

ALUMNAE AND ALUMNI AWARDS ANNOUNCED: The Awards Committee of the Alumnae and Alumni of Hood College are pleased to announce the recipients of the alumnae and alumni awards for this year. The awards ceremony will be held during the Alumnae and Alumni Luncheon Saturday, June 3. The Outstanding Recent Alumna/us award will be presented to Rachel Paine Caufield '95; the Distinguished Alumna/us awards will be presented to Eleanor Gambrill Bowers '46 and Anna Johnson-Winegar '76; and the Excellence in Alumnae/i Service award will be presented to Susan Peters Wirths '56. STUDENTS PRESENT DEPARTMENTAL HONORS RESEARCH PROJECTS: This year, 17 students from 10 academic departments presented their yearlong research projects to the Hood community. The honor students are designated Christine P. Tischer Scholars, named in honor of alumna and former member of the Board of Trustees Christine Plankenhorn Tischer '65 who helps fund the program. Stargazing at Hood PRESIDENT VOLPE SHARES HIS LOVE OF READING: President Volpe, along with several Frederick County business leaders and educators, was invited to participate in Reading Day at Valley Elementary School in Jefferson, Md. President Volpe was honored to read to two-second grade classes and to meet many Hood alumnae and alumni who are teachers and administrators at Valley Elementary.

HOOD STUDENTS TAKE A NONTRADITIONAL SPRING BREAK: Laura Moore, assistant professor of sociology, and 29 Hood students spent their spring break in New Orleans helping to rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The program, "Alternative Spring Break," attracted more than 650 students from 81 schools from around the country. Hood was honored for its participation as one of the smallest colleges with one of the largest contingents of volunteers. Their weeklong trip consisted of working in groups of 10 to dismantle homes destroyed by the hurricane. Hood students returned to campus tired but satisfied, knowing their help made a difference.

SPANISH AUTHOR LECTURES ON SHORT STORY WRITING: On Thursday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Avalon Performing Arts Studio, Tatem Arts Center, Ana Maria Moix will lecture on the art of short story writing. Click here for the full story.

ALUMNAE AND ALUMNI ART EXHIBIT: An exhibition of art created by Hood alumnae and alumni will be on display from April 26 – June 25, in the Hodson Gallery of Tatem Arts Center. Please join us for one of two receptions to be held on Wednesday, April 26, and during Reunion Weekend on Saturday, June 3. Both receptions will be from 6-8 p.m.

Each year the Campus Activities Board (CAB) stuffs goody bags ordered by parents for their daughter or son.
