SWIMMINGLY GOOD NEWS FOR HOOD: While beachgoers have been catching waves, Hood College has been making waves in the local and national news this summer. The College's recent unprecedented growth in enrollment has caught the attention of the media, resulting in coverage in local and national newspapers, magazines and television broadcasts. HOOD ALUM RECOGNIZED BY GOVERNOR O'MALLEY: Congratulations to Rhonda Schwinabart '00, project director at Frostburg State University's Institute for Service Learning, who was presented with the Governor's Annual Volunteer Award this year in Annapolis. Rhonda was selected from hundreds of nominations for the award and is one of 30 Marylanders who will receive it.

Hood RingNEW VICE PRESIDENT FOR ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT NAMED: One of the country's leading undergraduate recruitment experts has been named as Hood's vice president for enrollment management.

John Baworowsky, who has more than 20 years of experience in higher education enrollment management, financial aid and student affairs, will lead Hood's undergraduate recruitment efforts beginning August 17. In addition to traditional-aged, transfer and adult student recruitment, he will oversee the College's financial aid operation.

Baworowsky most recently served as vice president for enrollment management and academic services at St. Louis University. Prior to that, he was the vice president for enrollment and student affairs at the Illinois Institute of Technology; the vice president for admission and financial aid at North Park University; and the director of public relations at Aurora University and Illinois Benedictine College. In addition, he serves as a senior consultant with Noel-Levitz, higher education's largest enrollment management consulting firm.

STUDENTS HONORED AS FOUNDING DONORS OF INTERNATIONAL FUND: Frederick, Md., A group of Hood students, a Hood professor and two alumnae—one of whom is a faculty member at Hood—were honored June 20, Refugee Day, for their contribution as founding donors of an international refugee fund. NEW APPOINTMENT FOR HOOD ALUM: Newtown, Conn., Congratulations to Sherri Smith Baggett '81, who was recently promoted to business manager for her local hometown newspaper The Newtown Bee, a family-owned business that has been in publication for more than 35 years. Sherri was a communications major at Hood.

MASTER GARDENER SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNER WILL ATTEND HOOD: Brick, N.J., Congratulations to Christianna Campbell, Class of 2011, who recently won a $1,000 scholarship from the Master Gardeners Association of Ocean County, N.J. The scholarships were awarded to graduates of Ocean County high schools. Christianna, who will attend Hood this spring, plans to major in environmental science.

Hood RingBECOME A LEGACY AT HOOD: This is your chance to help a current Hood student. The Ring Scholarship Committee is seeking Hood rings to give to current students as part of the Legacy Ring Program. The ring recipients will be selected based on an application essay, grade point average and service to Hood. Deserving Hood students will be given your ring, which will have your graduation year inscribed on it, as a legacy ring. Not ready to part with that ring yet? You can still be a part of the ring tradition by making a contribution to the Ring Scholarship Fund, which is separate from your Annual Funds donation. These donations will be used to give deserving students full or partial scholarships toward the purchase of their rings. Lewis professor emerita of politics, will share her insights and join us for a tour of Hillwood Museum and Gardens, the former estate of visionary collector, philanthropist and businesswoman Marjorie Merriweather Post. The revitalized estate now provides a superior showcase for Hillwood's world-class art collections, including an improved museum-quality environment, renewed plantings and restored sculpture in the surrounding gardens. Noel LesterSTONEWARE BOWLS AND NAUTICAL TREASURES ON DISPLAY: FREDERICK, Md., Two ceramic exhibits—one of stoneware bowls that express the change of seasons and the other featuring nautical treasures in massive sculptural vessels—will be on display in the Hodson Gallery in the Tatem Arts Center now until Sunday, Aug. 19. Athletic News and Events

Hood RingNEW WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH NAMED: The athletic department has hired a coach with more than a decade of successful Division I coaching experience to lead its women's basketball program.

Jay Butler, whose experience includes head coaching stints at Columbia University, St. Mary's College of Maryland and Brown University, will take over for Tracey Kelley-Franklin, who resigned her position in July to take a position at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick.

Butler is a 1983 graduate of Castleton State College in Castleton, Vt. He was a three-sport athlete in basketball, cross country and tennis and was inducted into the Castleton Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. Butler also earned a master's degree credit in exercise physiology from the University of Maryland College Park in 1996.

Butler inherits a Hood squad which posted a 5-18 record in 2006-07 and finished fifth in the Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference with a mark of 4-6. The Blazers open up the 2007-08 campaign Nov. 16-17 at the Eastern Mennonite University Tournament. The Blazers will play all but one of their home games at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School this winter.

Noel LesterEQUESTRIAN TEAM HOLDS TRYOUTS: The equestrian club will hold open tryouts for the Hood InterCollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Hunt Seat Team at North Fork School of Equitation during the week of Aug. 27 through Sept. 1. MEN'S SOCCER ADDS TO COACHING STAFF: Brian Wall, Hood's head men's soccer coach, announced the addition of former Mount St. Mary's University forward Jeff Ormiston as his graduate assistant coach for the upcoming fall season.

A four-year letterwinner at the Mount, Ormiston is originally from Sherman, Conn., and earned a bachelor of science degree in business this past May. In 68 games, he scored five goals and added two assists for 12 points. Three of his tallies were either game-winners or game-tying goals.

Hood is coming off an 8-10-1 season and opens up the 2007 campaign Aug. 31 at the Frostburg State University tournament against LaRoche College.

TWO WOMEN'S LACROSSE PLAYERS HONORED: Rising senior Christa Lundskow and 2007 graduate Melissa Olson, members of the women's lacrosse team, were named to the 2007 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) Academic Honor Roll for their outstanding accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom. Congratulations Christa and Melissa!

THREE NEWCOMERS TO FIELD HOCKEY SQUAD: Head field hockey coach Staci Thomson announced the addition of three freshmen, Patsy Davis, Anne-Marie Hantman and Jennifer Krietz, who will play field hockey for the Blazers as they embark on their inaugural season in the Capital Athletic Conference. Frederick County residents Davis and Krietz are both defenders/midfielders. Hantman, who attended Kent Island High School, is a goalkeeper.
