KUDOS: In July 1972 Ann Metcalf '71 made history with 13 other women when she was among the first women to graduate from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. The Pennsylvania State Police was the first state police agency in the nation to train and use women as state troopers. Ann recently completed a documentary video called "The Original 14," capturing the history of these pioneers. The documentary will be aired throughout southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware during the month of July. PUBLIC LEADERSHIP EDUCATION NETWORK: Sarah Bigham, director of career services and service learning, believes strongly in preparing Hood students to be active leaders in society. One leadership program available through the career center and office of service learning is the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN). PLEN is a national, non-profit organization whose sole mission is to prepare women for public leadership. Since 1998 more than 75 of Hood's students have taken advantage of this excellent program. Through PLEN, students can participate in internships and targeted seminars where they learn about career opportunities, meet women who are leading policy change and network with influential people in the D.C. area. What graduate Denise Marino-Ryan '06 (pictured above far left) says about PLEN summarizes the benefits of this experience: "Attending PLEN solidified my career focus and inspired me to enroll this fall in a master's program at George Washington University in global health promotion and economic development."
