All five women shared experiences from their career paths and offered advice to students who soon will be traveling in their footsteps. KUDOS: This month, the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals named Deborah Eaton Thackston ’79 Maryland’s Assistant Principal of the Year. SOCIAL VISIONARY SPEAKER: LAYLI MILLER-MURO: On Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at 7 p.m. in Hood’s Whitaker Campus Center Commons, Layli Miller-Muro, author and executive director of the Tahirih Justice Center in Falls Church, Va., will speak on “Ending Violence Against Women: A Global Struggle for Social Transformation.” Miller-Muro will also be on hand to sign her book, “Do They Hear You When You Cry,” that she co-wrote with Fauziya Kassindja about Fauziya’s life, flight from Togo, Africa, and fight for freedom in the United States. FRANK DEFORD TO SPEAK ON CAMPUS: On Monday, April 3, 2006, at 4 p.m. in the
Whitaker Campus Center Commons, Marc Steiner of WYPR/WYPF 88.1 FM radio will
interview Frank Deford. Deford, a renowned sportswriter, author and commentator,
will be making several appearances in Frederick as part of the first annual
Frederick Reads project. Click
ALUMNAE HOUSE, HOOD COLLEGE, Friday, April 28, 2006, 3-4:30 p.m. P. Buckley Moss,
the nationally known artist who painted “Hood College Days” and established
the P. Buckley Moss Award for Special Education at Hood, will sign prints of
her Hood painting and sign already framed prints. Ten percent of the proceeds
of the sale of the Hood print will support the scholarship fund.
STARGAZING AT HOOD: Hood's Williams Observatory will be open
free of charge from 8:30-9:30 p.m. each Wednesday (unless the College is closed)
through May 3, 2006. Ken Howard, lecturer in astronomy, will be available to
answer questions and assist in providing views of celestial sites through
