FORMER PRESIDENT CHURCH NAMED BOARD CHAIR: Martha E. Church, who served as Hood College's president for 20 years, has been named as the chair of the College's board of trustees. Church, a lifelong scholar with a national reputation in higher education, was elected to the position by the board Oct. 18. She served as Hood College's president from 1975 to 1995 and was named president emerita upon her retirement from Hood. Click here to read the full story.

STAFFING CHANGES IN INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT: The division of institutional advancement is pleased to welcome two new staff members. Cassie Rudy (pictured far left), a native of Middletown, Md., joins the division as an administrative assistant. Cassie most recently worked in administration at Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz. Linda Hoffman (pictured at left), of Williamsport, Md., joins the division as associate director of alumnae and alumni programs. Linda is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where she worked for the alumni association as the director of corporate and community events and as a program management specialist/events coordinator.

SOCIAL VISIONARY SPEAKER: Wednesday, Nov. 8, 6-7:30 p.m., Whitaker Campus Commons. "Helping Paws, Helping Hands—Dogs in Service with People Panel." Panelists include Joseph Swetnam, executive director of Fidos for Freedom; Maureen McCabe of HosPets; Sam Balsam, founder of Search and Rescue Assist, with a disaster search and rescue dog; and Gabe O'Neill, founder of Wags for Hope, and his dog Charlie. Learn how dogs help people with disabilities, volunteer in nursing homes, hospice, adult day care facilities and disaster sites.

SAFE HARVEST: Alumnae and alumni are invited to join the Hood College Keystone Chapter of Mortar Board and the Hood campus for a one-of-a-kind fall fest and trick-or-treat celebration Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.! LIGHT THE NIGHT: Members of Hood’s staff and student body raised nearly $2,000 recently to benefit the Light the Night Walk campaign. The walk, sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, is a nationwide event to increase awareness and raise funds in hopes of finding a cure for blood cancer. The team of students and staff collected more than $600 in donations for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in memory of Jim White, the late husband of Olivia White, Hood’s vice president for student life and dean of students. CERAMICS EXHIBIT: An exhibition of ceramic works showcasing the theoretical events that take place in the kiln is on display in the Hodson Gallery of the Tatem Arts Center at Hood. Peter Pinnell’s exhibit, “Finding Art in the Ordinary: Ceramics by Peter Pinnell,” will be displayed until Friday, Nov. 10. AIDS AT 25 YEARS: The Center for Science and Mathematics cordially invites alumnae, alumni and guests to attend the next event of their lecture series, "AIDS at 25 Years." A movie, entitled "And the Band Played On," will be shown in Room 131 of the Hodson Science and Technology Center Thursday, Nov. 9 at 9 p.m. The 1993 film, based on the book with the same title, is an unforgettable story of the AIDS crisis. FALL ATHLETICS NEWS: Junior midfielders Liz Foreman (left) and Courtney DeSisto each netted goals recently to lift the women's soccer team to its fourth straight victory, a 2-0 shutout Oct. 19 over Gallaudet University at Thomas Athletic Field.

Junior Lindsey Nagy recently registered a team-high 15 kills and tallied nine digs to lead the volleyball team to an important Atlantic Women’s Colleges Conference match over Trinity University, 3-0 (30-20, 30-28, 30-13), at Gambrill Gymnasium Oct. 18. The Blazers improve to 3-11 overall, 2-4 in the AWCC, and remain in fourth place in the conference standings.

Juniors Shane McCarrick and Marcelino Rabara each scored first half goals as the men’s soccer team upended the visiting McDaniel College Green Terror at Thomas Athletic Field Oct. 18. The Blazers won their second straight game and evened their record at 7-7-1 overall while McDaniel dropped to 7-7-0.
