Three members of the Hood College golf team competed at the 2009 Capital Athletic Conference championship Saturday and Sunday at the Piney Branch Golf Club. Evan Chaney (above) was Hood's top finisher with a 36-hole score of 159 (80-79) to finish in a tie for ninth overall. Chaney earned all-CAC second team accolades for his performance. Andy Alger placed 16th with a two-round score of 167 (89-78), while Aaron Prescott finished 20th with a combined tally of 174 (90-84). York's Adam Dupler won medalist honors with a seven-over 149 (75-74), finishing four strokes ahead of runners-up Cliff Mangle of Stevenson University and Jeff Owsik of Wesley College. The Spartans captured the team title with a two-day total of 614 (311-303), 16 strokes better than second-place Wesley.

Hood split with McDaniel College Thursday and lost a pair to Catholic University Sunday to wrap up the 2009 season. In the opener against the Green Terror, Katherine Law (above) went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lift Hood to a 3-1 win, but McDaniel's Kelly Toms pitched a two-hit shutout and the Green Terror made a sixth-inning homerun by Erinne Warrenfeltz stand in a 1-0 triumph. Steph Gardner collected both Blazer hits in the nightcap. Then Sunday against the Catholic, Hood managed just three base hits all afternoon against the Cardinal hurlers. Sara Wastler singled twice in game one and Jen Lacy doubled in the top of the fifth of game two for Hood's lone base hit. In Capital Athletic Conference news, Hood junior Jen Willison became the first softball player to earn all-conference laurels, representing the blue and grey as one of three outfielders selected to the all-star team.

Hood fell to eventual conference champion University of Mary Washington Monday in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament Monday. David Blowe (above) won four games against Randy Loden at second singles, falling 6-3, 6-1. He finishes the season with a singles mark of 8-11. Blowe and Mike Hardman both ended the year with 3-3 singles records against CAC opponents. Carter Reitman won a team-high 11 matches for the Blazers this season, primarily at the No. 1 position.

Freshman pole vaulter Chris DiGangi set new school and personal records in placing sixth in a crowded field of 29 vaulters, many of them NCAA Division I and II athletes. In doing so, he cleared 14’ 5.25”, nearly four inches higher than his winning CAC jump the previous outing. Top finishers on the day were William Andrews and Brendan Greenlees, who braved high temperatures and swirling winds to finish second and third among a smaller field in the 10,000 meter run. Personal records were set by senior Tomilayo Komolafe (above) in the 400 and by freshman David Andren in the hammer throw and the discus.

Senior Amanda Kwiatkowski (above) was the lone female representative to travel to Shippensburg University Saturday for the Paul Kaiser Classic. Kwiatkowski contested the 100 hurdles, the 200 meters and the high jump. Hood travels to York College (Pa.) Saturday for a 10 a.m. meet.
