This Week
Sept. 4 at Towson University Invitational 4 p.m.

Seniors William Andrews (above), Blair Ames and Brendan Greenlees return to lead the men’s team. All three have run in the Blazers' top five for the last three years. Andrews, who along with Ames serves as captain, holds all major Hood cross country records and has run as first man for almost all of his previous three years on the team. Ames, the school record holder at 800 and 1500 meters, has had a solid summer of training, as has Greenlees.  Newcomers include freshman Brett Shelley who could well form the “chase-pack” behind Andrews. Sophomore Dave Gudeman is in his first competitive college season and is in solid all-around condition. Behind the top five are a group of long sprinters, including promising freshman Jordan McNeill.

Sept. 4 at Towson University Invitational 4 p.m.

Senior captain Jessica Stanley (above) anchors the women’s team. Stanley earned All-CAC honors at 400 meters last spring and is strong across a range of distances. Returning top five runners Maria Moss and Samantha Smith provide depth and experience. Joanna LaBoue, a sophomore with no previous competitive experience, could prove the surprise of the team. There are four or five runners who could emerge to provide depth, including senior Emily Brownlee who returns to the team after a two-year absence. The team took shots with the graduation of two-time all-CAC runner Danielle Sgro and the loss of Sarah Morris to an off-season injury.

Senior captain Brandy Noel comes into the season ranked second all-time in program history in goals scored and third in career points. Noel along with Lauren Perzan and Sarah Balukoff (above) will serve as team tri-captains. Following the graduation of 2008's starting keeper Jen Lacy, three young keepers, junior Anne Marie Hantman and freshmen Cathryn Mills and Kaitlin McCloskey, will battle for the starting role in the cage. The Blazers will also enjoy their inaugural season playing on the newly installed artificial surface.

The stage is set for success for the Hood men's soccer team in 2009. With a solid senior class, led by three-year starting keeper Shawn Fernholz (above) and 2008 leading scorer Quinn Miller, sixth-year head coach Brian Wall is optimistic about the prospects for the 2009 season. He has added seven freshmen and one sophomore to a corps of 19 letterwinners from a year ago. Hood's top three scorers from 2008 return as well as nine others who contributed at least one goal last fall. Hood will entertain six opponents the new state-of-the-art artificial surface this fall.

Coming off one of the most successful seasons in Hood College women's soccer history, the Blazers return 16 letterwinners, including starters at nearly every position, from the 2008 squad which advanced to the semifinals of the CAC tournament and set a school record for goals scored in a season. Hood welcomes back its top three scorers from a year ago in junior Cara Jordan and sophomores Carlie Colella and Jessica Devine, as well as two-year starting keeper Rachelle Buhrman and second team all-CAC honoree Jen Fischer (above). Second-year head coach Paul Wood and the Blazers will also enjoy their inaugural season playing on the newly installed artificial surface.

Hood's newest addition to the coaching staff, Jaime Pryor will take the reigns of the Blazer volleyball program, which enters its third season in the Capital Athletic Conference. Pryor welcomes back four of the top five attackers from last year's squad and has added three newcomers to the mix in hopes of securing the program's first CAC victory. Middle hitter Ashley Burns (above) is one of two seniors on the roster and led the Blazers in kills in 2008. Junior Kristina Straub is a versatile contributor who could see time at setter and in the front row. Newcomers Brittany Lethbridge, a middle hitter, and Brittany Tribbett, a setter, should make an immediate impact on the court.
