Men's Basketball (6-13, 3-7 CAC)

Hood snapped a four-game losing skid Saturday with a 97-81 upset of the University of Mary Washington. Freshman Brenden Straughn led the way with a career-high 29 points, including five triples. Classmate Chris Leggett (above) also had a breakout game, tallying 19 points in just his second start of the season. Leggett came into the game having only scored 22 points in his previous 10 appearances. Hood drained a season-high 13 points en route to its best offensive outburst of the year. Senior Tim Abercrombie is 99 points away from breaking the 1,000-point barrier. Hood is currently in eighth place in the conference, two games out of making the top six and earning a spot in the playoffs.

Hood dropped a pair of decisions to nationally ranked Capital Athletic Conference foes last week. Junior Jen Willison needs just 52 more points to become the seventh Blazer women's basketball player to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Additionally, with her next three-pointer, Sara Wastler will become the fourth Hood player to register 100 career three-point field goals. The Blazers look to snap an eight-game game losing skid Monday against Gallaudet University. Hood recorded its lone CAC triumph over the Bison Jan. 7.

Men's Swimming (1-8, 1-5 CAC)

The Blazers traveled to the University of Mary Washington for their final dual meet of the season. Matt Haynes placed second in the 100 free (50.16) and third in the 100 breast (1:08.98). Chris Nemecek was fourth in the 200 free (1:59.16) and third in the 100 fly (56.15). Chris Moreland was fifth in the 200 IM (2:12.76) and third in the 500 free (5:30.66). Hood journeys to St. Mary's College (Md.) Feb. 13-15 for the CAC championship.

The Blazers traveled to the University of Mary Washington for a double dual for their final tuneup before the Capital Athletic Conference championships in two weeks. Ashley Garyn finished eighth in the 1000 free and sixth in the 100 free, while Erica Hamor took seventh in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 breast. Kristen Kucharski (above) finished 10th in the 200 IM and seventh in the 100 fly. Hood journeys to St. Mary's College (Md.) Feb. 13-15 for the CAC championship.

Hood was one of eight schools participating in Dickinson's Ducharme Invitational, which represented the first competition of the season for the 2009 version of the track and field squad. The highest Blazer finish of the day was recorded by sophomore Ola Komolafe who finished fourth in the 400 meters in 53.50. His effort was complemented by his senior brother, Tomilayo, who finished seventh. The team picked up a series of fifth-place finishes, led by freshman Chris DiGangi who vaulted 12'0" to finish fifth and also finished fifth in the high jump. Junior Blair Ames (above) completed the effort by finishing sixth in the 800 meter run. DiGangi and Mike Richter competed in their first collegiate competitions. DiGangi (pole vault & high jump) and Ames (800) ran school-best indoor times as the track and field teams began their third season of varsity competition.

Fresman Emma Arneson finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles and eighth in the long jump despite not yet being able to practice the event. Senior Amanda Kwiatkowski (above) was seventh in the 55-meter hurdles. Arneson and Mollie Widdowson participated in their first collegiate competitions. Arneson (long jump) posted a school-best indoor mark (13' 5 1/2") as Hood began its third season of varsity competition.
