The Blazer men inched closer to clinching a spot in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament following a 2-1 week. Freshman Justin Stone (above) recorded his first collegiate double-double, including a career-high 22 points, against Gallaudet University Tuesday in a game played at Mount St. Mary's University. The Blazers rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to clinch a two-point victory. Sophomore Tory Wilson came off the bench to pace the Blazers with 16 points against the University of Mary Washington, including what proved to be the game-winning layup with 2:03 remaining. Hood's final regular season contest is slated for Saturday at the Odom Fitness Center at Fort Detrick. The Blazers, currently in fifth place in the CAC, host sixth place Marymount University at 6 p.m. Hood defeated the Saints, 61-60, on the road on Jan. 18 thanks to some buzzer-beating heroics from Wilson, who netted the game-winning layup just before time expired. Hood will honor seniors J'Air Brady, Anthony Bennett and Joe Tressler before Saturday's matchup.

Senior Jen Willison continues to ascend to the top of the program's all-time scoring list. With 1,292 career points, she has now passed Mandy Fischer '04 for fourth place in the blue-and-grey. Freshman Dyanna Prater picked off a career-high eight steals against St. Mary's College (Md.), one away from the single-game school record. Freshman Stacey Jones notched a career-high 10 points opposite Gallaudet University while classmate Jessica Talley matched her season-high with eight boards. The Blazer women close out the 2009-10 campaign hosting nationally ranked Marymount University Saturday at 4 p.m. Before the contest, Hood will recognize seniors Brianna Raithel (above) and Willison for their contributions to the program.

Hood begins its sixth season of intercollegiate competition Saturday with its largest and most talent-rich squad yet. The Blazers return their top four scorers from 2009, including junior captain Kris Miner (above) (19 goals, eight assists) and senior captain Sofi Lazar (13 goals, one assist). Second-year head coach Curt Foxx also welcomes 15 newcomers who should see significant action. The Blazers were scheduled to make their debut on the new turf field Saturday against Christopher Newport University; however that contest has been moved to Christopher Newport. The Blazers' next home contest is slated for Saturday, Feb. 27, against Shenandoah University.

Hood's nucleus of six seniors, including four four-year starters, will be vital to the Blazers' success in 2010. Coming off their first winning season since 2005, third-year head coach Molly Hesterberg Evans has added considerable depth to her roster with the addition of eight newcomers. Junior attack Kelsey Blackwell (above) was ranked among the Capital Athletic Conference leaders in assists and points per game last season while sophomore goalkeeper Sam Liptrap listed third in the conference in goals-against average a year ago. Hood will play its first four games on the road before hosting Washington & Jefferson College Saturday, March 6. Senior Chris Moreland closed his Blazer career in style by leaving his name etched in the record books in three events. Moreland lowered his 400 individual medley record and earned a spot in the championship final with a time of 4:32.06 in Saturday morning's trials. He ended up eighth overall in the event. Moreland was also part of two record-setting relay squads. Swimming the anchor leg, Moreland teamed with Jonathan Moughty (above), Andrew Bodine and Matthew Benoit to rewrite the 200 medley relay standard from the 2005-06 season with a time of 1:44.35. Additionally, that same foursome took down another record from the 2005-06 season in the 400 medley relay with a clocking of 3:56.56. The Blazers finished seventh in the team standings with 166 points.

Senior Erica Hamor and freshman Taryn Scafide (above) advanced to the consolation finals of their respective events at the three-day Capital Athletic Conference championship. Hamor earned points for Hood by placing 15th in both the 400 individual medley (5:15.37) and the 200 butterfly (2:35.22). Scafide competed in her first collegiate consolation final, registering a 14th-place finish in the 200 back (2:52.15). The Blazer women also swam some of their fastest races of the season en route to a seventh-place finish in the team standings.

Sophomore Chris DiGangi, the defending CAC champion in the pole vault, won his signature event by clearing 14' 5.25" Saturday, which tied his outdoor school record from the end of last season. The men's 4x800 meter relay team of Blair Ames, Jordan McNeill (above), Brett Shelley and Brendan Greenlees set a new indoor mark by two seconds. Another strong performance came from Ryan Struss, who extended his indoor record in the 35-lb. weight throw. He also closed to within a foot of the indoor mark in the shot.

The 4x400 meter relay team broke both indoor and outdoor school records running 4:39.52 in finishing 13th overall. Freshmen Megan Cahill, Chloe Ey (above), Becky Leathers and senior captain Jessica Stanley joined in ripping nearly 10 seconds from the previous best set a last year's Capital Athletic Conference championship outdoor meet.
In addition, the 4x200 meter relay shaved three seconds off the indoor mark. The event is seldom run in college, but Cahill, Ey, sophmore Emma Arneson and Stanley took it down substantially.
