The Blazers open up the 2008-09 campaign against a nationally ranked opponent at the Lycoming College Tournament Saturday. Hood will take on the No. 18 University of Scranton Royals at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the two-day tournament. Hood returns eight letterwinners from last year's squad, which finished third in the Capital Athletic Conference. Senior Ryan Junghans (above) paced the offense with a 20.0 scoring average last season and ranked among the conference leaders in numerous categories. Starters Tim Abercrombie and Rian McHenry also return to the hardwood for sixth-year head coach Tom Dickman.

Nov. 15 vs. College of Notre Dame (Md.) 7 p.m.
Hood returns six letterwinners from last year's squad, all of whom have starting experience. Second-year head coach Jay Butler will turn to last season's leading scorer and rebounder Jen Willison (above) to pace the Blazers once again. The junior forward averaged 14.1 points and 9.0 rebounds and ranked in the top eight in the league in both categories. Senior guard Sara Wastler returns for her fourth season and looks to continue to climb Hood's career assists chart, where she currently sits in 10th place (144). Sophomore guard Allyson Lethbridge had an impressive freshman campaign and is one of Hood's top three-point threats. Hood entertains the College of Notre Dame (Md.) Gators Saturday in Gambrill Gymnasium.

Nov. 15 at NCAA Mideast Regionals (hosted by Waynesburg University) 11 a.m.
Hood was idle last week but will travel to Waynesburg, Pa., Saturday for the NCAA Mideast Regionals. Last fall the Blazers placed 37th at the event and posted the program's fastest combined time (2:26.09) in five trips to the regional. Junior William Andrews (above) was Hood's top finisher in 27:46.

Hood was idle last week but will travel to Waynesburg, Pa., Saturday for the NCAA Mideast Regionals. Last season senior Danielle Sgro (above) posted the program's fastest regional time (24:03) and Hood placed 33rd overall at the event.

Every Blazer rider came home with a ribbon Sunday at the University of Richmond show as Hood concluded its fall slate. Co-captain Emily Bernstein rode in the advanced walk/trot/canter class as Hood’s designated point rider for the division. Bernstein finished sixth giving Hood a point in the team standings. Freshman Katie Geiger also rode in the advanced walk/trot/canter division. In her third IHSA Show, Geiger finished fifth in her class. Another first-year rider, Amy Thompson, competed in the walk/trot class as that division’s designated point rider. Thompson finished second adding five points to Hood’s team score. The IHSA spring season begins Feb. 15, 2009 with a show in Poolesville, Md., hosted by George Washington University, American University and the University of Maryland.

The Blazers’ record-breaking season came to an end Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to second-seeded St. Mary’s College (Md.) in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. Rachelle Buhrman had 11 saves for Hood, while Cara Jordan (above) had the team’s only two shots on goal. Among the team records set this year were goals scored in a game (11), goals in a season (55), shutouts (10), consecutive shutouts (4) and unbeaten streak (7). On the individual side, Jordan and Whitney Boyer tied the marks for goals scored in a game (4) and points in a game (8). Additionally, Jordan and Carlie Colella tied the record for assists in a game (3).

Chris Nemecek (above) took first in the 100 fly for the second time this season (55.84) in Hood’s tri-meet at St. Mary’s College (Md.) Saturday. As a team, the Blazers fell to both St. Mary’s (142-39) and Catholic University (158-36). Nemecek also placed third in the 200 free (1:54.46), while Matt Haynes came in third in the 50 free (23.36) and the 100 free (51.90). Chris Moreland rounded out the individual scoring for Hood with a third place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:13.75). The Blazers return to action Saturday with a CAC meet at Marymount University at 2 p.m.

Hood traveled to St. Mary’s College (Md.) Saturday where the Blazers lost 149-41 and 170-28 to Catholic University and St. Mary’s, respectively. Junior Erica Hamor led Hood with fourth place finishes in the 200 free (2:12.70) and the 100 free (1:00.22). Sophomore Kim Wolfgang (above) also came in fourth in the 100 back (1:07.60).
