The Blazers opened the 2008-09 season with a 90-59 loss to the University of Scranton in the Lycoming College Tip-Off Tournament Saturday, but came back to defeat Penn State Hazelton, 96-76, in the second round of the tournament Sunday. Junior J’Air Brady scored a career-high 24 points in the win and was named to the six-man all-tournament team. Also reaching double figures for Hood were senior Jeff Willison (16 points), freshman Brenden Straughn (12) and seniors Ryan Junghans (16) and Tim Abercrombie (above) (14). The Blazers are scheduled to matchup against New Jersey City University Friday at the Lebanon Valley College Tournament.

Junior Jen Willison recorded her 16th career double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds as the Blazers fell to Notre Dame (Md.) in their season opener, 82-62, Saturday. Sophomore Allyson Lethbridge (above) had 14 points and seven rebounds for Hood, while senior Sara Wastler scored 11 points. The Blazers are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Averett University for a nonconference game.

Hood’s men’s cross country team wrapped up the 2008 season with a 36th place finish out of 43 teams at the NCAA Mideast Regional at Waynesburg University. Junior William Andrews crossed the tape first for the Blazers, clocking in at 28:47 to place 166th of 306 competitors. Also scoring for Hood were senior Nick Manning (30:04), junior Brendan Greenlees (30:42), junior Blair Ames (31:04) and senior Mattia Mabellini (above) (31:37).

Senior Danielle Sgro was Hood’s top finisher at the NCAA Mideast Regional at Waynesburg University, placing 151st of 305 runners with a time of 26:04. As a team, the Blazers finished 37th of 44 schools in their final cross country meet of the season. Freshmen Maria Moss (27:15) and Sarah Morris (above) (27:38), senior Jessica Stanley (27:41) and sophomore Sam Smith (29:58) also scored for Hood.

Sophomore Chris Nemecek placed first in the 200 free (1:52.78), coming within 0.58 seconds of the school record, in Hood’s 79.5-55.5 loss to Marymount University Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action. Freshman Chris Moreland (above) also earned a first place victory, tying with Marymount’s Ryan Kilmon for top honors in the 50 free (24.01). Senior Matt Haynes took second in the 200 IM (2:15.30), while sophomore Kyle Atras placed third in the 100 free (1:08.72). Hood’s next meet is slated for Friday and Saturday at the Randolph-Macon Invitational.

Senior Michelle Leggieri took first place in the 100 free (59:92) and placed second in the 50 free (27:64) Saturday as Hood fell to Marymount University 92-49. Junior Erica Hamor (above) also scored for the Blazers, placing second in both the 200 free (2:11.49) and the 200 fly (2:37.98). Hood returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Randolph-Macon Invitational.
