Men's Cross Country

Senior William Andrews paced the field of 18 runners Saturday in a 5K dual meet between the Blazers and Southern Virginia University. Andrews completed the course around the perimeter of Hood's campus in 17:33.74 to claim top honors. Freshman Brett Shelley (above) finished as the runner-up in the race with a clocking of 17:51.68. The senior tandem of Blair Ames and Brendan Greenlees took fifth (18:21.82) and sixth (18:42.77), respectively. Greenlees completed his 32nd race in a Hood uniform. No other Blazer men's cross country runner has ever run more; he broke Steven Delaney's previous record of 31. Sophomore Dave Gudeman crossed the tape eighth in 18:54.73 to round out the Blazer scorers.

Senior Jessica Stanley took top honors in the 5K dual meet with Southern Virginia University Saturday morning on Hood's campus. She outdistanced runnner-up Leila Schultz and a pack of three other SVU runners by 44.09 seconds with a clocking of 22:53.10. Freshman Erica Burgess (above) (24:22.34, sixth) and senior Emily Brownlee (24:36.79, seventh) ran No. 2 and 3, respectively, for the Blazers. Juniors Sam Smith and Kristina Coggins along with senior Janelle Dionne also completed the race around Hood's campus. Smith came in 13th in 27:00.04, Coggins was 16th in 33:40.54 and Dionne checked in with a time of 37:20.98.

Equestrian

The equestrian team had a successful show at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competition hosted by Goucher College and the heavy rain held off long enough to complete the show. Only three members of Hood’s team rode at this competition but every rider earning a ribbon and individual points. Joe Morris and Katie Geiger rode in the advanced walk-trot-canter division. As they competed in separate sections, they both drew the same horse, rode well, and both placed fifth earning two individual points each. Amy Thompson (above), the team captain, was the bright spot of the day. She placed first in the walk-trot division earning a blue ribbon and seven individual points. Having accumulated 35 points in the walk-trot division, Thompson will now regularly compete in the beginning walk-trot-canter division. By “pointing out” of a division, Thompson qualified to ride in the Zone 4, Region I regional competition at the walk-trot level on April 3, 2010.  She is the first Hood College rider to make regionals in four years.

The Blazers finished the 2009 campaign on a winning note after defeating Wilson College, 2-1, Sunday on Senior Day. The Blazers went 5-4 in nonleague games this year. Senior Brandy Noel (above) scored two goals and added two assists on the week and ends her impressive Blazer career ranked second in program history in career points with 48. She registered the game-winner in double overtime against Notre Dame Monday and had a hand in both goals Sunday against the Phoenix. Sophomore Maria Smith notched the game-winner against Wilson in the 63rd minute.

Men's Soccer (3-12, 1-6 CAC)

Hood ended a five-game slide Friday with a 5-0 win over Gallaudet. The win was the Blazers' first in Capital Athletic Conference action this season. Senior Carlin Rabie netted a pair of goals while senior Shawn Fernholz, sophomore Zach Salisbury and junior Derrick Kuhn (above) all recorded their first goals of the season. Freshman Jaime Ramirez also picked up his team-leading fourth assist of the fall. The Blazers wrap up the 2009 season at York Wednesday.

Women's Soccer (8-6-1, 2-5 CAC)

Oct. 27 vs. University of Mary Washington 3:30 p.m.

The Blazers got back on the winning track Tuesday and put the skids on a four-game slide while picking up their eighth shutout of the season. All eight of Hood's victories this fall have come via the shutout. Junior Cara Jordan collected five points in the win on two goals and an assist. Her team-leading total now stands at 27, which lists seventh on Hood's single-season scoring chart. She also needs just two more assists to match the single-season record held by Tamara Maggard '07. Sophomore Casey Miller scored a pair of goals while freshmen Jen Civick, Becky Leathers and Amanda Hutzell (above) all added single tallies.

Freshman Andrew Bodine picked up his first collegiate win by capturing top honors in the 200 individual medley. Bodine bested two Falcons in the event with a time of 2:16.19. He was also third in the 100 back (1:03.22). Senior team captain Chris Moreland took second in the 1000 free (12:37.37) and the 500 free (6:01.34). Junior Kyle Atras came in fourth in the 200 free (2:34.24) and third in the 500 free (7:08.93) while senior Thomas Williams (above) finished fourth in the 50 free (32.49) and the 100 free (1:14.68) and third in the 100 breast (1:26.08). In the first meets of their hood careers, Ethan Weidman finished third in the 200 free (2:13.16) and placed third in the 100 free (59.69), while Matthew Benoit took third in the 50 free (24.19) and second in the 100 fly (1:03.41). Hood is idle until Nov. 6.

Junior Kristen Kucharski (above), sophomore Aleece Groome and freshman Taryn Scafide each won an individual event in the season-opening meet for the Blazers. Kucharski bested Alyson Wareing in the 200 free with a time of 2:19.54. Groome and Scafide, competing in their first races for the blue and gray, garnered nine points apiece for their efforts in the 200 individual medley and the 100 back, respectively. Erica Hamor took second in the 1000 free (12:48.71) and the 100 fly (1:11.73) while newcomer Andrea Haines finished third in the 50 free (33.74) and second in the 100 breast (1:29.15). Hood is idle until Nov. 6.

Freshman Brittany Tribett notched her fifth double-double of the fall and matched her season-high with 34 assists to go along with 12 digs in a heartbreaking five-set loss to Notre Dame. Junior Kristina Straub put down 11 kills, finishing one shy of tying her seasonal high. Classmate Chelsea Weaver tallied a match-high 25 digs, the seventh time this season she has recorded 20-plus digs. Sophomore Megan Heidel (above) also tied her season high with four kills. Hood will honor its two seniors, Ashley Burns and Leah Garland, before Friday's match.
