The men's cross country team finished third at their own Hood Invitational on campus Saturday.
The junior trio of Blair Ames (17:37.48), William Andrews (17:40.15) and Brendan Greenlees (17:41.80) finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively and all within four seconds of one another. Nick Manning (17:47.31) and Mattia Mabellini (above) (18:18.72) completed the Blazer scoring contingent. Hood travels to the University of Mary Washington Saturday for the biggest meet of the year, the Capital Athletic Conference championships.

Nov. 1 at Capital Athletic Conference Championships (hosted by the University of Mary Washington) 11 a.m.
Hood placed fourth of five complete teams Saturday at the Hood College Invitational on campus.
Danielle Sgro was Hood's top finisher once again, crossing the tape third of 34 runners in a time of 20:34.27 in the 5K race. Sarah Morris ran No. 2 for Hood in a time of 21:41.36, good for 12th place. Maria Moss (above) (22:14.85) and Jessica Stanley (22:15.71) took 16th and 17th, respectively, while Sam Smith rounded out the scorers for the Blazers with a time of 23:55.87. Sgro hopes to repeat as an all-conference performer this weekend at the Capital Athletic Conference championships at the University of Mary Washington.

Hood wrapped up its fall slate Saturday suffering a tough 2-1 loss to St. Vincent College at home. The Blazers started the week with a 4-1 victory over Shenandoah University on the road. Sam Liptrap scored twice and Brandy Noel (above) and Jess Head chipped in single tallies in the triumph. Noel finished the season with a team-high six goals while Liptrap was second with three scores.

Hood fell to Stevenson University, 2-0, Wednesday in its only contest of the week. Shawn Fernholz made eight saves in defeat. Conor Prachar (above) and the Blazers host the second-ranked team in NCAA Division III, the York College (Pa.) Spartans, Wednesday in their regular season finale.

Hood defeated Lancaster Bible College 5-0 Monday in its only contest of the week. Alexa Hubicki scored twice while Cara Jordan (above), Jessica Devine and Carlie Colella all added single tallies. Rachelle Buhrman and Kristen Cacciola split time in the net to record the shutout. Hood hosts the College of Notre Dame (Md.) Monday and travels to Mary Washington Wednesday. The Blazers will participate in their second straight CAC tournament Saturday.

Freshman Chris Nemecek broke the school record in the 100 butterfly Saturday as the Hood College men's swim team opened its 2008-09 season at Capital Athletic Conference rival York College (Pa.).
Nemecek won the 100 fly in 55.71, lowering the previous standard of 56.62 set by Jimmy Shea during the 2005-06 season. He was also third in the 200 free. Team captain Matt Haynes placed third in both the 50 free and the 100 back. A.J. Smith finished sixth in the 50 free, fifth in the 100 free and sixth in the 100 breast. Thomas Williams took seventh in the 50 free, sixth in the 100 free and seventh in the 100 breast. Chris Moreland was third in the 200 IM and fourth in the 100 breast. Kyle Atras (above) came in sixth in the 100 fly and fourth in the 500 free. Hood is idle until Nov. 8 when the Blazers journey to St. Mary's College (Md.) for a CAC double-dual with Catholic University.

Hood lost to the York College (Pa.) Spartans, 168-32, Saturday in the season-opening meet for both schools.
Kim Wolfgang (above) finished third in the 200 IM and was second in the 100 back by 0.3 seconds. Melissa Masino competed in both distance events, taking fourth in the 1000 free and fifth in the 500 free. Erica Hamor placed fourth in the 200 free, third in the 100 fly and fourth in 100 breast. Team captain Ashley Garyn took fifth in both the 200 free and the 100 free. Sprinter Michelle Leggieri was third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free. Kristen Kucharski came in fifth in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 fly. Kara Cruice was sixth in the 200 IM, seventh in the 100 free and sixth in the 100 breast. Hood next travels to the College of Notre Dame (Md.) Saturday for a 2 p.m. nonconference meet.

Hood sophomore Kristan Hawkins (above) smacked a career-high nine kills in the Blazers' 3-0 loss to York College (Pa.) Wednesday. The Blazers wrap up the regular season this week with a Capital Athletic Conference road match at Mary Washington Wednesday before entertaining Catholic University Thursday. Hood will honor seniors Christienne Burrell, Jamie Gardner and Bailey Runkles before the match.
