Men's Cross Country

Ten teams descended on John Ruddy Park, just outside York, Pa., to compete in the York College Invitational. The Blazer men were led by senior captain William Andrews’ 13th place finish and freshman Brett Shelley’s 14th place finish. Both earned individual awards by finishing in the top 15, and their effort led Hood to a third place finish among eight teams, five of which were complete. Senior Blair Ames had a nice race, finishing in 17th place, just barely out of the individual awards. Completing the team scoring were Brendan Greenlees and Dave Gudeman (above), finishing in 23rd and 24th, respectively.

Women's Cross Country

The Blazer effort was led by senior captain Jessica Stanley, who powered her way from 16th place at the mile to a fifth place finish. Joanna LaBoue (above) continued her remarkable first year of competitive running by snagging 10th place. The two top 10 finishes earned individual awards and led the Hood women to third place out of 10 complete teams. Completing the team scoring for Hood were Maria Moss (20th), Erica Burgess (25th), and Sam Smith (32nd). Also competing in her first 5K race was Kristina Coggins (56th).

Hood sophomore midfielder Jacquie LeMar (above) scored two game-winning goals as the Blazers earned their first two wins of the season. The goals were the first of her Hood career. LeMar snapped a 1-1 tie with Goucher College Thursday by tallying her first career score with 3:14 left before halftime. Then Saturday versus St. Vincent College, she scored the contest's only goal 5:15 into the second overtime on a penalty stroke to lift the Blazers to their second straight win. Junior Anne Marie Hantman registered the first shutout of her Blazer career against the Bearcats. Hood looks to make it three in a row for the first time since the 2004 season Monday when it hosts Shenandoah University, a team it defeated 4-1 last fall.

Men's Golf

Junior Evan Chaney fired a five-over 77 to pace the Hood College men's golf team to a school-record-tying team score of 333 Monday at the season-opening Penn State Harrisburg Invitational. Chaney's round of 77 put him in a six-way tie for 12th place out of 62 golfers at the event, which took place at Dauphin Highlands. He was seven strokes off the pace set by Brian Herman of Rutgers-Camden who won medalist honors with a two-under 70. Sophomore Tyler Fairley and junior Aaron Prescott carded identical scores of 85 while junior Andy Alger finished with a score of 86. Freshman Ira Benoit registered a score of 91 in his first Hood golf match. The Blazers placed 10th of 12 schools in the tournament. Fellow Capital Athletic Conference rival York College (Pa.) won the tournament with a combined score of 309.

Men's Soccer (1-5, 0-0 CAC)

Senior Quinn Miller (above) scored his first goal of the season and eighth of his Blazer career on a penalty kick in the 76th minute against Lancaster Bible College Saturday. Classmate Shawn Fernholz turned away six shots in the narrow 2-1 loss to the Chargers. Corey DeMaster and Jacob Ausherman also fired shots on net but both were denied by Charger keeper Jake Kreider. Hood opens Capital Athletic Conference play this week hosting a pair of league rivals. The Blazers take on the University of Mary Washington Eagles Wednesday and the Marymount University Saints Saturday in the first game of a soccer doubleheader at Thomas Athletic Field.

Hood outshot its opponents 85-2 and racked up 11 goals in a pair of shutouts last week. Junior Cara Jordan became Hood's all-time assist leader Wednesday with her 15th career helper on a corner kick in the 38th minute against the College of Notre Dame (Md.). Sophomore Carlie Colella (above) tallied her first hat trick in the blue and grey against Mt. Aloysius College Saturday. Junior Rachelle Buhrman and sophomore Kirsten Cacciola combined for their fourth and fifth shutouts of the season. The Blazers lead the Capital Athletic Conference in several statistical categories, including points, goals and assists. Hood hosts a pair of nonleague games this week.

Junior Mike Hardman (above) won both of his singles matches last week against Shenandoah University and Catholic University. The native of Bowie, Md., downed CUA's Bernardo Nogales, 6-0, 2-6, 6-2, and ousted Shenandoah's Julian Fehr in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Hardman also paired with sophomore Carter Reitman to earn victories at first doubles in both matches. Hood wraps up its fall season Thursday hosting Goucher College at 3:30 p.m. at the Baker Park Tennis Courts.

Senior Jillian Elkaim (above) cruised to a pair of wins at first singles over Shenandoah University and Catholic University last weekend. She surrendered just five games to her opponents in her two matches to start the season 2-0. Classmate Dani Hunt dispatched Catholic's Isti Kuhn, 6-1, 6-1, at second singles. The tandem of Hunt and Elkaim upended Katie Johnson and Marjorie Selinger, 8-4, at first doubles for Hood's third point of the match. The Blazers host Goucher College Thursday at the Baker Park Tennis Courts.

Hood presented first-year head coach Jaime Pryor with her first collegiate coaching victory Saturday by sweeping Trinity University (D.C.) at the Catholic University quad match. The Blazers aced the Tigers 23 times and hit a season-high .467. In the 3-2 loss to Marymount University, junior Kristina Straub registered Hood's first triple-double on the season with 11 kills, 11 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore Megan Heidel (above) amassed a career-high 11 digs opposite the Saints while senior Leah Garland set up a season-high 12 kills. Hood hosts a pair of matches this week including Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley College Wednesday.
