Men's Cross Country

Senior William Andrews (above) of the Hood College men's cross country team placed 42nd of 107 runners at the Don Cathcart Invitational hosted by Salisbury University at Winter Place Park Saturday. Andrews set a senior class 8K record with a clocking of 27:36 to pace the Blazers. His time was a scant five seconds off his own overall school record set at this course during his freshman campaign. Freshman Brett Shelley crossed the tape four seconds after Andrews and took 44th. Andrews and Shelley turned in the second and third-fastest times, respectively, in program history. Hood finished in ninth place out of 11 complete teams (14 total). The Blazers have three weeks off to prepare for their own Open Meet at Heritage Farm Park in Walkersville, Md., at 11 a.m.

Women's Cross Country

Senior Jessica Stanley paced seven members of the Hood College women's cross country team at the Don Cathcart Invitational hosted by Salisbury University at Winter Place Park Saturday. Stanley completed the 5920-meter course in 25:45, good for 55th place out of 108 competitors. Her time was the 19th-fastest in program history. Sophomore Joanna LaBoue was the second Blazer to cross the tape in 26:20. Sophomore Maria Moss was 30 seconds behind LaBoue and set a personal record by 24 seconds. Senior Emily Brownlee (above), freshman Erica Burgess and junior Sam Smith all finished within 50 seconds of one another and all below the 30-minute barrier. Brownlee's time bested her personal record by a gaudy seven minutes. Smith carved 42 seconds off her personal best. The Blazers finished ninth out of 12 complete teams. Hood has three weeks off to prepare for its own Open Meet at Heritage Farm Park in Walkersville, Md., Oct. 17 at 11 a.m.

The Equestrian Club Team starts its fall season this weekend with two Intercollegiate Horse Show Association competitions at Goucher College.

Hood surpassed its win total from 2008 with a 7-0 rout of Rosemont College Friday. Senior Brandy Noel scored a school-record four goals, eclipsing the previous mark of three set by Niki Gough from the 1997 season. Senior Jen Graham and junior Katelyn Bramkamp (above) notched their first tallies of the season. Hood's seven goals are the most scored in a single game since Oct. 2, 2001 when the Blazers found the back of the cage a school-record 13 times against Trinity University (D.C.). Hood battles a pair of Capital Athletic Conference rivals this week. Tuesday's game will pit the Blazers against the Stevenson University Mustangs. Both squads are in search of their first conference wins of the season.

Men's Golf

Junior Aaron Prescott (above) carded a nine-over 81 to lead the men's golf team to a 19th place finish at the Lebanon Valley College Fall Invitational Monday at the Lebanon Country Club. Prescott finished in a five-way tie for 36th place out of 116 competitors. Hood junior Andy Alger tied for 62nd with an 85 (+13), while classmate Evan Chaney notched an 86 (+14) for 70th. Rounding out the Blazer contingent were Ira Benoit, who tallied a 92 (+20), and Tyler Fairley, who registered a 93 (+21). Albright College won the invitational with a combined score of 307. The Blazers compiled a score of 344, besting four other schools for 19th place. Hood travels to Messiah College Thursday.

Hood senior netminder Shawn Fernholz made 10 saves on the week in a pair of Capital Athletic Conference matches. The Blazers look to halt a four-game losing skid Tuesday at Waynesburg University. Hood will return to Thomas Athletic Field Saturday to host CAC foe Wesley College. The Blazers will recognize seniors Corey DeMaster, Max Gebhart, Adam Gilbert, Quinn Miller, Carlin Rabie (above), Chris Zimmerman and Fernholz before the contest.

Women's Soccer (6-2-1, 1-2 CAC)

Hood remained unbeaten in nonconference games (5-0-1) this season after a draw with Washington College and a shutout win over Chatham University. Hood's unbeaten streak against nonleague foes has reached 10 dating back to September 2008. Sophomore Jessica Devine booted her fourth goal on the year and classmate Casey Miller finished a penalty kick for her first score against the Shorewomen. The Blazers scored three second half goals en route to registering their sixth shutout of the fall against the Chatham Cougars. Juniors Cara Jordan and Abby Dyjack as well as freshman Jen Civick scored in the triumph. Hood will face winless Marymount University Saturday in its lone contest of the week. The team will recognize seniors Nikki Antalffy, Laura Hines (above) and Brittany Hurt before the contest.

Fall season complete

Hood won three singles matches and earned the doubles point to edge regional rival Goucher College Thursday for their first win of the season. Sophomore Carter Reitman (above), junior Mike Hardman and senior David Blowe all earned straight set singles victories at the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions, respectively. Reitman and Hardman teamed to defeat Michael Brooks and Steve Baum, 8-5, and David Blowe partnered with younger brother Andrew to knock off Charlie Leonard and Billie Weiss, 8-6. Hood has completed its fall slate and will resume play again in February.

The first doubles tandem of senior Jillian Elkaim and sophomore Emily Schrodel registered the lone point for the women's tennis team against visiting Goucher College Thursday. Elkaim and Schrodel held off Joan Pulupa and Meghan Lee, 9-7. Elkaim and classmate Dani Hunt lost heartbreaking singles matches in three sets at the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. Elkaim fell 6-3, 2-6, 6-10 to Carly Heinz. After losing the first set to Mara Bergman, 4-6, Hunt rallied to take the second set 6-4 but narrowly lost the decisive third set, 11-9. Sophomore Nicole Voelker and junior Lindsey Hathaway (above) played their first singles matches in the blue and grey but came up on the short end of two straight set decisions. Hood is idle until Oct. 9 when it travels to the College of Notre Dame (Md.).

Senior Leah Garland matched her season-high with 11 digs opposite Wesley College Wednesday and again Thursday against Lancaster Bible College. Junior Kristan Hawkins (above) tied her career-high with nine kills and posted five blocks against the Chargers while classmate Kristina Straub tallied a double-double with 13 digs and 13 assists. The Blazers seek their first Capital Athletic Conference triumph in program history this week with a pair of league rivals on the docket. St. Mary's shows a record of 1-1 in CAC matches while Marymount is 0-2 in the early going.
